Derek Hare Art for Sale and Sold Prices

Derek Hare was born on the North East coast of England and the Durham and Northumberland coastlines became the first sources of inspiration for his earlier paintings.

Having studied commercial art at Sunderland Art College, he became a professional painter in 1965.

Derek moved away from the north of England at that time, first living in the Channel Islands before moving to London, where he still lives most of the time. Having begun to establish himself in the early 70’s, he spent time in Sweden, Norway and Northern Germany, where he lived for some time on an island in the Baltic Sea, exhibiting widely in these locations as well as in UK. Throughout the 80’s, his reputation became much more established, both in UK and Germany, where many of his main collectors, both private and corporate, still are to this day, testament to the longevity of the paintings.

In 1989, Derek revisited Portugal, a country he first saw in the early 80’s. Here, the crashing Atlantic breakers on the ruggedly beautiful West Coast, north of Cape St Vincent, inspired many paintings of long, dramatic beaches, often wreathed in sea-fret. Here also, the seasons cause fascinating changes to the rock formations along the sands, as winter storms erode the shale and granite cliff faces.

About the same time, the Bahamian island of Abaco provided a totally different source of material, the shallow, iridescent waters demanding exciting changes in his palette. He spends several months each year in the islands and many iconic images have been produced as a result of these visits. His original Bahamas seascape paintings are in collections throughout the world.

Spending many months of each year out of the UK, visiting these locations, as well as trips to India, Morocco and the Seychelles in his search for new material, whilst also preparing work for exhibitions and commissions, keeps Derek very busy. As a painter mainly of landscape and marine subjects, he is always happiest on or near the ocean. Fortunately, he has been able to tailor his lifelong passion of oil painting and combine it with his second love, the sea. In the UK, Scottish and East Anglian coastlines, together with northern moorlands and Northumbrian beaches, figure strongly in his work, providing dramatic contrast to his more exotic locations.
