Channing Weir Hare New York, Florida., (1899 - 1976) Morning Glories, 1969 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right. Ex. Palm Beach Galleries, Palm Beach FL From the Archives of askART: A resident of both Palm Beach, Florida and Ogunquit, Maine, Channing Hare was a member of the Ogunquit, Art Association. Although a respected painter, he was identified more with the summer society life than with the art colony. One of his best friends and also business partners was artist Mountfort Coolidge, and "the two men were synonymous with glamour, flamboyance, and chic. Late night theatre parties to celebrate the opening of each new show at the recently opened Ogunquit Playhouse, celebrity guests from Palm Beach where Hare and his wife wintered, a home filled with Persian rugs, rich textured fabrics and a wardrobe of dashing finery were Channing Hare'es trademarks." (Tragard 75) In Florida, he was a member of the Society of Four Arts of Palm Beach. Despite his seeming preoccupation with society life, "he was a brilliant society portrait painter who reportedly commanded top prices for his paintings at that time. His collectors included Beatrice Lily, Booth Tarkington and Alexander Woolcott. He was trained at the Art Students League in New York City with George Bellows, Robert Henri and William Zorach. Exhibitions included the Society of Independent Artists, 1924; Salons of America, 1933-1934; Baltimore Museum of Art, 1936; Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1952; Corcoran Gallery of Art Biennial, 1953; Findlay Galleries, 1962; and Palm Beach Galleries, 1964-66 and 1968.
