Initially published anonymously in monthly instalments in the Cornhill Magazine from January to December 1874, each with a full-page illustration and vignette initial by Helen Paterson (who became Helen Allingham during the run when she married the poet William Allingham in August 1874). In a later letter to Edmund Gosse, Hardy described her as "the best illustrator I ever had" (Purdy, p.13).

A Novel, 3 vol., first edition, [one of 500 copies], half-titles, bookplate of Anthony Conyers Surtees, vol. 3 first text f. mounted on stub, a few small marginal chips or tears repaired, touching couple letters to final f. of vol. 1 but no loss,  occasional spotting or very light foxing, bound in green half morocco by Zaehnsdorf, gilt, spines a fraction sunned, a few faint scuff marks, t.e.g., [Purdy, pp.3-5], 8vo, Tinsley Brothers, 1871. *** Hardy's rare first published novel, issued anonymously and so poorly reviewed in The Spectator that it was remaindered and Hardy lost money. He later destroyed the manuscript.

First edition, three volumes, publisher's red cloth (Purdy's "secondary binding"), cover designs stamped in black after a design by Hardy himself, spines gilt-lettered with the imprint "Co" with the period under the "o", a three-rule border blocked in blind on lower covers, cream endpapers; housed in a single book-style leather-backed slipcase with chemises. 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches (18.75 x 12 cm); vi, 295, [1] pp.; vi, 276 pp.; vi, 259, [1] pp. Spines slightly dulled, the first volume with the hinges cracked at the endpapers, some staining, and a small puncture in the gutter margin of the last quarter of the book, some bruising to the fore-edge of the second volume from string. With the Norman Spingarn bookplate in each volume. Hardy's historical novel of the Napoleonic era. Purdy notes that this secondary binding is scarcer than the supposed primary, which has a 2-rule border on lower cover. Purdy, pp.31-35; Sadleir 1115.
