Maitres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle epoque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Cheret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 and 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. In this image, the British artist Dudley Hardy (1866 - 1922) advertises the Strand Theatre in one of the most innovative designs of the period. Hardy plays with the use of positive and negative space, much like Toulouse Lautrec. Only the gentleman's shoes, shirt, hands, and head are depicted - the rest is a bold, flat black. This push and pull of elements is a hint of the pared down graphics to follow in the works of poster artists such as Leonetto Cappiello. This is an original vintage poster, not a reproduction. This poster is on heavyweight paper, and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Though little is known of this particular production, the poster serves as a great example of Hardy's theatrical promotions and his detailed portraiture. (Art Nouveau; Theatre)

ARTIST: DUDLEY HARDY (1867-1922) SIZE: 19 7/8 x 29 in./50.5 x 73.5 cm DESCRIPTION: The prolific English artist Dudley Hardy is best known for his work for publications and the theater, both as illustrator and posterist. His work for commercial firms is considerably rarer. And yet, his contribution to English poster art is considerable: "He really introduced the colour poster to England... His posters are strongly derivative of Chéret's; it would not be unfair to call him the poor man's Chéret. Like Chéret, he appreciated the advertising value of sex-appeal, and his recurring subjects are legs, tutus, frou-frous, and legs again. The range of expression and antic is between a frisky insouciance and a brassier glamour" (Hillier, p. 97). Another similarity to Chéret can be found in this poster for Hall's Coca Wine, a beverage similar in composition to the Chéret-advertised Vin Mariani (see PAI-XXXIII, 280). And note the interesting identical color choice of their models' apparel—both in yellow. (Art Nouveau; Alcohol)

The popularity of "A Gaiety Girl" resulted in over a dozen parodies and imitations being produced in the following years. The plot is nothing remarkableit circles around a stolen comb and romantic obstacles. The actual draw came from the Gaiety Girls themselves: a troupe of vivacious female dancers all dolled up in the latest fashions who traipsed about the stage as often as possible. It was sold in Paris for 2.50 francs for one month's subscription, (4 Maitres) and for 27 francs for 12 months (48 maitres), plus special (bonus) plates. Maitre's were never issued in a book form, but a binding of the 12 months Maitres was offered to subscribers, at the end of the year, with a beautiful hardcover design by Paul Berthon for 8 Francs. The ""Maitres de l'Affiche,"" were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as ""plates"" (PL). They were numbered, with the printers name ""Imprimerie Chaix,"" in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, ""PL.1"" to ""PL.240.""
