Midnight was an hour, an age ago; the time for masks and formalities generally, is over. In the stately Pump Room the dignitaries of the city of Bath are still twirling delicately over the ballroom floor. Outside, the night air is caressingly warm, the Roman stone impossibly cold against her shoulder. The music winds faintly down the steps. The alcove is a thsuand years old; the story is much older than that. The car pictured in the present print took part in the BP Visc-static 100,000 Mile Trial undertaken in 1961. British Petroleum initiated the trial as a test of it's BP Visco-static Motor Oil on six different models: the Ford Anglia, Hillman Minx, Jaguar 38; Mini Minor, Triumph 1200, and Vauxhaull Velox; the car pictured here is a Ford Anglia 105E. In an advertisement published by BP the following year in auto magazines, the company boasted that "BP recently conducted one of the most stringent trials ever run. They took 6 ordinary cards. And under the supervision of the R.A.C., ran each of them for nine solid months." In the advertisement, the R.A. Chief Engineer is quoted as saying "I was extremely surprised at how little wear there was on all the engines. In every case they were in excellent condition and showed a marked absence of sludge deposits. Oil consumption in every case, was exceptionally low. All this points to extremely good lubricating qualities of the oil used."

Silver gelatin print, printed later, image size 240mm x 350mm, signed by the photographer in black marker lower right margin recto, with Hardy's Chartlands Farm stamp verso. Framed, frame size 465 x 555mm In January 1948, this iconic Bert Hardy image of two young boys running to a local shop in the Gorbals was published in Britain's pioneering photo journal 'Picture Post'. This street scene would go on to become Hardy's best-known image -- a defining moment in a career that informed a distinctly British style of social documentary disseminated through the 'Picture Post'. The article advocated urgent social reform and was accompanied by thirteen photographs, three by Bill Brandt and the rest by Bert Hardy. This image shows two young boys running to the local shop. It became one of Hardy’s most iconic works, capturing childhood optimism beyond the poverty and squalor that most families experienced whilst crammed into the area’s tenements. ARR
