        ⒶEDWARD J. HARDING (1804-1870) PORTRAIT OF LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH, P.C. (1836-1882) signed & dated l.r. 1862 watercolour heightened with bodycolour 37 x 27 cm/14 1/2 x 10 34 in Cavendish~s political career was brief but highly influential: he travelled with Granville to the fledgling USA and Spain; was elected MP for West Riding of Yorkshire in 1865; and after serving as private secretary to Gladstone, when he became Prime Minister, he became a junior Lord of the Treasury, holding that office until the resignation of the ministry. He was Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 1880 to 1882, afterwards being appointed Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. Within hours of arriving in Dublin and swearing the Oath as Chief Secretary, he was brutally murdered by Irish Nationalists calling themselves the ~Invincibles~. Cavendish~s body was buried near Chatsworth, now the Devonshire family seat, with 300 MPs and 30,000 others following the coffin. Part proceeds to benefit Westminster Abbey

        Lady Elizabeth Deane (née O'Callaghan Newenham) (d.1851) and her daughters, Susanna Adelaide (1837-1919) and Olivia Louise (b.1838), before Classical columns, foliage and red drapery: the former, wearing pale blue dress with white lace trim, large gold framed cameo brooch at her corsage; the elder daughter, standing and wearing white dress with lace trim to the collar and sleeves, red and white striped sash, her hair parted at the front and plaited, the back tied in a knot, she looks at the bracelet on her mother's right wrist; the younger daughter, seated and wearing identical white dress and hair style, red coral necklace, Lady Deane's arm around her and a posy of flowers at her waist. Gilt-metal slip and carved giltwood frame, the reverse inscribed For/ H.M. Falkin(gs)/ after/ our departure/ 1899/ miniature of/ (Eliza) Lady Deane/ done by/ Harding of Cork.         EDWARD J HARDING (Irish 1804-1870), The Donkey Ride, family portrait, a gentleman with his wife and child, watercolour and pencil heightened with white, signed and dated 1839, Christie's Sale lot ticket No.128 19 May 2000 verso, 19 1/4" x 14", gilt frame Edward J Harding, address 11 South Mall, Cork, was a portrait painter in oil, watercolour, pen and ink. He painted the young Queen Victoria. He was also a miniaturist.
