(Löwenberg 1809–1878 Berlin) The Coral Necklace, signed, dated H. Hanstein 1836, oil on canvas, 100 x 77 cm, framed Hermann von Hanstein was a German painter who was born in 1809 in Löwenstein, Brandenburg and specialised in genre, landscape, portrait and miniature painting. He first trained in Berlin with Wilhelm Herbig, a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, where he exhibited from 1828 to 1878. At the age of 28 he moved to the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, where he enjoyed lessons with Theodor Hildebrandt, an important representative of the Düsseldorf school of painting, until 1840. He then returned to Berlin, where he married, started a family and was later appointed professor and royal court painter. He became a member of the nobility in 1870.

View of the Swiss mountains Black stone, ink and wash 30 x 37.9 cm Signed and dated "H v Hanstein 1869" below in the middle Von Hanstein achieved this view of the Jungfrau in the Swiss Alps through careful observation of the surrounding nature, following the precepts set up by Impressionist painters in France, for example, rather than by the artist's imagination alone in the studio. Trained by Wilhelm Herbig at the Berlin Academy, von Hanstein produced portraits, miniatures, religious scenes and landscapes. It is in the latter genre that he shows all his art of drawing, as shown in this view which moves by its sense of the sublime, that "delicious terror" defined by Edmund Burke in 1757, and which was then dominant in 19th-century romantic Germany.
