Provenance: MCA Auction, Chicago, 1973. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (MCA) held a benefit auction in 1973. In this auction were five Mystery Boxes, each containing miniature works created by various Chicago artists for this event. The boxes were offered sealed and the buyer did not know exactly what was inside. The boxes themselves were finely crafted by Chicago artist Don Baum and were made of pine with brass hardware, with various stencils on the outside. Baum made individual cardboard boxes for each work, packed in yellow foam. Some works were multiples, others unique, but the contents of each Mystery Box varied. These works have never been offered for sale 3" x 2.75" x 1.25"
