(Naestved 1834–1922 Frederiksberg) Siblings Resting on a Forest Path in the Summer, signed, dated N. C. Hansen 1895, oil on canvas, 109 x 85 cm, framed The Danish portrait and genre painter Niels Christian Hansen studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1851. In the early 1860s he undertook numerous study trips to France, England and Belgium. After his artistic training, he worked mainly as a portrait painter from about 1855 before following in the footsteps of his father, Carl Christian Hansen. The latter was one of Denmark’s first daguerreotypists and a pioneer in portrait photography. In 1867, Niels Christan Hansen founded the photo studio “Hansen & Schou” with his brother Georg Emil Hansen and the merchant Albert Schou, and, only two years after opening, became royal purveyors to the court and portrayed mainly aristocrats and the bourgeoisie. From 1889 Hansen withdrew from photography to devote himself to painting. His formative years as a photographer are clearly recognisable in his later paintings, which, as in the present lot, give the impression of photographic accuracy. The warm summer atmosphere of the forest in which two children are resting in a clearing is depicted by Hansen in a skilfully detailed, naturalistic style. The boy, standing with his walking stick next to the girl sitting on the soft forest floor, seems delicate and small between the mighty trunks of the trees. The painter knew how to position the children in the picture and yet give nature enough space, allowing the scene to appear refreshingly spontaneous.

Charcoal and pencil Denmark, 1895 Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Both signed and dated ‚Niels Chr. Hansen 1895' Dimensions: 44.2 x 57.5 cm and 46.2 x 58.5 cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Excellent and fine portraits Provenience: Part of Hansen's the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map; Private Property These two drawings of an unknown gentleman's bust by the Danish photographer and potrait painter Niels Christian Hansen show the gentleman from two different angles. Obviously, Hansen must have studied the bust in all details and from different perspectives. As a viewer you get the impression of seeing the bust in a nearly all-around view. Hansen has managed to show you the original material of the bust - the stone - in his drawing: especially when looking at the collar and the hair the stone of the bust is clearly visible. The man's face is clearly individual and not just some ideal face. Both sheets are in good condition, showing traces of wear and age, as well as some creases and small tears (some material loss). Portrait with border: 44.2 x 57.5 cm , signed and dated ‚Niels Chr. Hansen 1895'; Portrait looking to the left: 46.2 x 58.5 cm, signed and datet: ‚Niels Chr. Hansen 1895'. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Hansen studied at the Royal Danish Academy for Arts in 1851 and started working as a portrait painter in 1855/56. During this time, photography began to rise and Hansen, instead of fighting the new medium, adapted to it. He joined a partnership with a photographer and soon their company Hansen, Schou & Weller became the most famous photo studio in Copenhagen. They took pictures of all the important people of their time and many of their photographs can today be found in the most exclusive portrait collections worldwide.

Charcoal and pencil Denmark/Germany, 1890s Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) - Danish portrait painter and photographer All three sheets signed "N. C. Hansen" Statues shown: Pugilist by Canova, a Satyr, and the Borghese Gladiator Dimensions: between 45 x 69.5 cm and 5 x 67.5 cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Fine set of virtuoso studies Provenience: Part of Hansen's recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map; Private Property When the Dane Niels Christian Hansen left his photo studio in Copenhagen in 1889, he presumably went on a "Grand Tour" to visit continental Europe's museums. He drew studies of many important sculptures and busts amongst them the three in this lot: The pugilist Creugas, created by Antonio Canova 1795/1801 in marble, and nowadays shown in the Vatican Museum in Rome; the satyr with buck's ears dancing and making music by stepping on an antique musical instruments, nowadays shown in the Uffizi, that Hansen shows to us as a beautiful back view. The perspective that Hansen chose to show the Borghese Gladiator from the Louvre is also unusual and gives you the feeling of being protected by the gladiator. All sheets show traces of wear and age as well as creases and tears along the rims (material loss), the drawings themselves are hardly affected. Pugilist: 46 x 70.2 cm, signed and titled ‚N. C. • Niels Chr. Hansen, Four Foot Sketches in Pencil, around 1892

Niels Chr. Hansen, Four Foot Sketches in Pencil, around 1892

      Est: €310 - €380

Pencil drawings on paper Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) - Danish portrait painter and photographer Three sheets signed, one without signature One sheet dated "92", two others inscribed with specifications Expert and realistic drawings Dimensions: 19,5 x 46 cm - 60 x 54 cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Provenience: Part Hansen's recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map; Private Property The Danish portrait painter and photographer Niels Christian Hansen has not only studied heads but has also done intense studies of the body's extremities. The correct perspective drawing of feet and hands has always been a special challenge for many artists. It was Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891), a famous art critic and physician, who wrote a whole theory about how to identify the painter of a tableau by studying the way hands and feet of the persons in the picture were executed. The ability to draw and paint feet from all angles and in the right foreshortening of the perspective has to be practiced hard. Looking at Hansen's drawings it can easily be said that he had achieved mastership in this field. Three sheets in good condition with traces of wear and age and some material loss along the margins. The sheet with the head shows extensive tears and material loss, therefore only a fragment of the head is left. The dimensions and inscriptions of the sheets are: 1. Foot "10 Zoll": 61 x 45 cm, signed ‚Niels Hansen', inscribed ‚10 Zoll'; 2. Foot "4 ¼ Zoll": 19,5 x 46 cm, signed and dated ‚Niels Hansen 92', inscribed ‚4 ¼ Zoll breit'; 3. Three feet: 61 x 44 cm, signed ‚N. Hansen' 4. Head and feet: approx. 60 x 54 cm. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Two Studies of "Alexander The Great" by Niels C. Hansen, 1898

      Est: €400 - €500

Charcoal and pencil Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Portrait (frontal): signed and dated ‚Niels Chr. Hansen 1895', dimensions: 45 x 54,7cm Portrait (looking to the left): signed and dated ‚Niels Chr. Hansen 1895' Dimensions: 44,5 x 52,2 cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Excellent drawings Good condition Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's Niels Christian Hansen left his successful photo studio in Copenhagen in 1889 and presumably went on the Grand Tour to visit continental Europe's important museums. He made many drawings copying the most relevant sculptures and busts and trained his skills. As a trained portrait painter and photographer, Hansen had a much schooled eye for the right angles as well as the effect of light and shadow. This explains why he did not just copy the head of the dying Alexander as seen from the front but as seen from below. Hansen's Alexander's head ends precisely where the real bust shows a clearly visible line, suggesting that it might not have been put together when Hansen drew it. Both sheets are in good condition and show traces of age and storage with creases and tears in the margins. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. • Two Pencil Drawings "Paris" after Canova, by N. C. Hansen, 1895
      Sep. 20, 2013

Two Pencil Drawings "Paris" after Canova, by N. C. Hansen, 1895

      Est: €400 - €500

Two pencil and charcoal drawings Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Portrait (frontal): signed lower right ‚Niels Chr. Hansen' and dated in the border of the bust: 13.02.1895; Dimensions: 51,5 x 66cm Portrait (lateral): Dimensions: 46 x 65cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Expertly executed drawings Good condition Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's These two large and masterful drawings portrait the famous bust of 'Paris' by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) that can nowadays be admired at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hansen has drawn the bust from two different angles and seeing both together can give you the impression of nearly getting an all-around view of the bust. Niels Christian Hansen, a Danish portrait painter, studied the sculptures and busts of all the great masters to improve his skills - with success as these two artworks give excellent proof of. They are done in charcoal and pencil and even the border is hand drawn. As the drawing of the frontal Paris is dated in the border of the bust it can be assumed that the other drawing has also been made around the 13th February 1895. Hansen has taken some strange liberties in the drawing of the lateral portrait: he has drawn a fingertip on the border of the Phrygian hat that has absolutely nothing to do there. The medium of the drawing and the grey of the pencil beautifully show the marble's structure and colouring. Both sheets are in good condition and show traces of age and storage, as well as creases. Great Drawing of Pigalle's Mercury, by Niels C. Hansen, 1890s

      Est: €240 - €300

Charcoal and pencil Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Signed 'N. C. Hansen' Dimensions: 48,5 x 82cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Expert drawing Very detailed Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's Niels Christian Hansen, a portrait painter from Copenhagen, left his photo studio in Copenhagen in 1889 and presumably went on "Grand Tour" to visit continental Europe's museums. He made studies of all the important sculptures and busts and amongst them also the beautiful sculpture of mercury attaching his winged shoes. Originally created by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) in 1748 to enter into the Académie Royale, the sculpture had been a huge success and immediately got copied many times over. Hansen's drawing fascinates through its extreme detail. The sheet shows wear and folds, creases as well as tears, yet the drawing itself is hardly affected. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Charcoal and pencil Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Portrait (looking to the right): signed and dated ‚Niels Chr. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Excellent and fine drawings Impressive and individual Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's These two portraits of a young gentleman by Niels Christian Hansen show the gentleman from two different angles. Obviously, Hansen must have studied the bust from both sides and gives you the impression of a nearly all-around view of the bust. Hansen has managed to transform the material of the bust, the stone, into the drawing. The young man is traditionally dressed and his necklace with a horse shoe pendant makes him a bit different. The gentleman's individuality is delicately drawn and the drawing is a good evidence for Hansen's mastership.
