Marcelle Hanselaar Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1945 -

Marcelle Hanselaar was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and travelled extensively in Asia and Europe before finally settling down in her studio in central London. Although she studied briefly at The Royal Academy, The Hague,1962-'64, in oil painting she is entirely self-taught. In 1992/93 and again in 1995/96 Hanselaar was invited to teach painting at the S.W.Teaching University, Chongqing, China, she also taught drawing at Sotheby's Educational Institute, London from 1989-'99.

Around that time Hanselaar became interested in etching and learned printmaking first at Morley College and later at Kensington & Chelsea College. Marcelle Hanselaar's early painting was abstract but from 1992 her work became completely figurative. Hanselaar, 2004, 'Tied' 5/30, 37.5cm high x 29cm wide Viktor Wynd notes: "I am a huge fan of Marcelle Hanselaar’s work and curated an exhibition of her etchings at my gallery. The museum continues to display her work and I have quite a few pieces by her at home. This is one of my very favourite etchings – I loved it so much that for some reason I felt the need to buy two of them – one for home and one for the museum". Provenance: Viktor Wynd’s Museum, London. The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & UnNatural History is a contemporary reinterpretation of a Pre-Enlightenment Wunderkabinett or Cabinet of Curiosities. It is the creation of artist and writer Viktor Wynd, who has just opened a Falmouth branch of his museum inside the National Maritime Museum.       Paper dream - Signed and titled on the stretcher - Oil on canvas, 80 x 80.1 cm - Provenance: Collection Pon, the Netherlands - N.B.: Marcelle Hanselaar quit her training at the Koninklijke Academie in The Hague early and settled in the centre of London where she developped herself further as a self-taught artist. Her body of work commences with several abstract works, and subsequently developes in a more expressionistic and figurative style. Hanselaar is represented internationaly by Saatchi Gallery and is a member of The London Group, which was founded as a counterpart of the Royal Academy of Arts.
