First Nations Haida Argillite Totem by Tom Hans

            Est: $900 - $1,350

Tom Hans (First Nations / Canadian, Haida, b. 1925). Totem Pole. Argillite sculpture, n.d. Signed with location on verso. A lovely argillite totem pole, hand-carved by the prolific Haida artist Tom Hans to display, from top to bottom, a bird, perhaps a falcon, perched on a column, a wolf, and a seated beaver holding a human head. Size: 1.75" W x 8.25" H (4.4 cm x 21 cm) Tom Hans held Eagle as his family crest, and his Haida name was Aye Aye. He was one of the most prolific argillite carvers living in British Columbia. Born in 1925, he grew up in Skidegate and started to carve argillite at an early age. His grandfather was Henry Young, and his father was Ike Hans. His father both taught and encouraged him in the art of argillite carving. For over fifty years, Tom was dedicated to carving argillite, and teaching younger carvers. In terms of Tom's carving style, he often depicts legends and myths, rather than singular crest figures. His pieces also contain a great amount of detail. At 12 years of age Tom carved his first pole, which still sits in the owners house in Vancouver, BC. Each pole represents one of the Old Legends as told to Tom in his youth by his grandfather, Henry Young. Tom resides in Vancouver, BC and still carves the argillite poles, implementing a legend from the past into each one. Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Nov. 10, 2022

Haida Argillite Totem Pole, Tom Hans (Eagle Clan)

            Est: $1,800 - $2,500

Tom Hans (First Nations, Haida, 1925 to present) ca. 20th century CE. A hand carved argillite totem pole by the Haida artist Tom Hans, a member of the Eagle clan and resident of Skidegate British Columbia. His carvings illustrate traditional stories of his Haida culture; in this piece there is an eagle, orca, beaver, and a frog base. Hans comes from a family of carvers, learning the art as a teenage from his father, and over his nearly 50-year career he also mentored and influenced generations of Haida artists, including his nephew, Ken Hans. Size: 2.75" L x 2.3" W x 10.25" H (7 cm x 5.8 cm x 26 cm) Argillite is a fine grained sedimentary rock that is essentially made of mud and ooze; it often has a smooth and lustrous appearance like this example. In the 19th century, the Haida people began to carve this material as a trade good for visiting Europeans and Americans, because of the decline of their traditional economic practice of fishing. Items like this one served as a way to show their artistic merit and introduce some of their iconography to the outside world. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
