Alice Hanratty Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1939 -

Alice Hanratty (born 1939[1] Dublin) is an Irish artist who specialises in printmaking. She studied painting and printmaking at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and the Hornsey College of Art, London. She is a member of the Aosdána affiliation of Irish artists[2] and of its governing body, the Toscaireacht.[3]

As well as exhibiting work in major Irish group shows, she has represented Ireland at exhibitions such as the International Impact Exhibition, Kyoto in 1989; the Works on Paper Group Exhibition at the Armory, New York in 1992; the London Original Print Fair, Royal Academy of Arts, in 1995; the International Biennale of Print, Beograd in 1998; and the Estampe International Print Exchange, Paris, in 2001.[2]

Provenance: Collection of Eugene and Mai Lambert Dimemsions of second work 12 by 9.5 in. The Lambert Puppet Theatre was established in 1972 by its director Eugene Lambert (1928-2010). Located in Monkstown, County Dublin, it is the only purpose built puppet theatre in Ireland. With the rise of television in 1960's the Lambert Puppet Theatre became a fixture in Irish broadcasting with their very first show Carta Húdaí which aired in 1962 for which Mai Lambert made the costumes and their ten children acted as puppeteers. The Lamberts continued to produce shows such as Murphy agus a Chairde 1963-1968, Wanderly Wagon 1968-1982 and Bosco 1978-1987. Eugene and Mai Lambert were keen art collectors, expressing particular interest in works which relate to entertainment such as lot 177 by Brian Bourke and lot 183 by Harry Kernoff, and puppetry images, lots 190-194.

Established by Spranger Barry and Henry Woodward, the Crow Street Theatre was one of Dublin's most popular theatres during the Georgian period. The theatre was occasionally used for indoor horse racing, with the final stages of the race taking place on stage, as depicted here. With thanks to the artist for her help in cataloguing this lot.
