    • Robert Hannah - Confidence, The Post Boy - oil on canvas

Robert Hannah - Confidence, The Post Boy - oil on canvas

      Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Robert Hannah (British, 1812-1909) Confidence - the Post Boy oil on canvas h:92 w: 71 cm Provenance: Samuel Rogers, Esq., FRS The sale of the collection of Samuel Rogers - Christie's, London, 28 April- 10 May 1856, lot 570, Robert Hannah - Confidence: a post-boy whistling as he knocks at the door, sold for £59 guineas to Agnew Sold to Mr Mackie on 25 March 1858 by Agnew's who also bought the companion painting "Diffidence" on 26 April 1858. Private collection, Scotland, and by descent. Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1844 (No. 222) exhibited by Robert Hannah, of Shrubbery House, Brompton Road, London. Other Notes: Engraved: By Samuel Bellin (1799-1893) and published by William Spooner on July 12 1845. A copy of this engraving, dedicated to the owner, Samuel Rogers, Esq, FRS, is in the collection of the Royal Mail. The Penny Red came in in 1841 - the Royal Mail employed postboys to carry the letters, riding on horses which were often decrepit. In 1762, the merchants of Dundee complained of postboys riding "lame horses that scarcely go at a trot". Postboys were also vulnerable to highway robbery, and it was not safe to send valuables through the mail. The post horn was used to signal the arrival or departure of a post rider or mail coach. The black Maltese Cross postmark was officially in use from February 1841 until May 1844, although examples have been seen in 1840 and after 1844. Robert Hannah studied art in Liverpool; later at the RA Schools, London, and finally in Rome, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1842 to 1870; he died in London. In the absence of certain knowledge of the present owners of how this picture has descended to them from Mr Mackie, and since there was no size given at the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1844, and nor was the size recorded when Agnew's were in possession of both the ex Rogers collection pair, on the grounds of quality alone one can with some reason believe that this is not a copy but the original painting by Robert Hannah.
