Father Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968) Antibes

        Est: €1,000 - €1,500

Father Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968) Antibes watercolour on paper signed 'JACK P. HANLON' lower right h:35.60  w:50.90 cm. Provenance: Private Collection In this view of Antibes-as much an abstract composition as a topographical watercolour-Jack Hanlon weaves together skilfully his response to the visual elements of this Provencal town, translating red-tiled roofs and palm trees into simple, minimalist, dashes of colour. The palette is muted, with earth tones, mauves, reds and blue-greys enlivening the work. The majority of the painting however is white space, allowing the different abstract elements to float freely on the watercolour paper. Hanlon worked within the Modernist aesthetic pioneered by Picasso in the early twentieth century, and in the 1940's, Picasso established his home at the Grimaldi palace at Antibes. The Mediterranean city was a popular destination for artists in the twentieth century; Claude Monet painted there, as did Nicolas de Stael and Paul Signac, while in the 1920's Gerald and Sara Murphy lived at Antibes. Born in Templeogue, Dublin in 1913, John Thomas ('Jack') Hanlon studied at UCD and trained for the priesthood. Coming from an affluent family, even as a student he was able to travel regularly on the Continent, trips that included studying in the late 1930's with André Lhote in Paris, painting on the Cote d'Azur, and even receiving advice from Henri Matisse. Although undated, this watercolour is probably from these early years, when the influence of Lhote is most evident in Hanlon's work. In 1936, two years after first exhibiting at the RHA, Hanlon joined the Society of Dublin Painters. After his ordination in 1939, his first clerical appointment was as chaplain at Arbour Hill Prison. That same year, his art was shown at the World's Fair in New York. Hanlon is best known for his semi-abstract watercolours and gouaches, and for his fresh and lively approach to colour and form. He had his first solo show at Waddington Galleries in Dublin in 1941, and two years later was a founder, along with Jellett, Norah McGuinness and others, of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. He was a prolific artist, exhibiting annually with the IELA and Oireachteas shows, and receiving commissions for Stations of the Cross and other mainly religious works of art. His murals include Our Lady of the Sea, painted in 1953 in the chapel of the Irish Naval base on Haulbowline Island, Cork. As a priest, he ministered in parishes in Dublin and Wicklow up to 1967, the year before his death. Peter Murray, March 2023

Fr. Jack P.Hanlon (1913-1968)  Madonna and Child   c. 1955, O.O.C., 48cms x 41cms (19” x 16 ¼”).  (1)   This charming painting of a Madonna and Child by Fr. Jack Hanlon embodies both his instinctive skill with colour, and his ability to introduce religious themes into a broadly Modernist aesthetic. A connection with the religious-themed paintings of Mainie Jellett is clear, but this is to be expected, as early in his career, Hanlon attended classes given by Jellett. The inclusion of figures of farm workers in the background ties in with his aesthetic and also his social beliefs. Although the central figures of Madonna and Child are important, the painting is also a joyful quasi-abstract essay in bright colours, with passages of ultramarine blues, pale yellows, light ochres and purples. Born in Dublin, Jack Hanlon studied at UCD and trained for the priesthood. Coming from a relatively affluent family, he was able to travel regularly on the Continent, including studying with Andre Lhote in Paris, painting on the Cote d’Azur, and even receiving advice from Henri Matisse. In 1936, two years after first exhibiting at the RHA, he joined the Dublin Painters group. After his ordination in 1939, Hanlon’s first clerical appointment was as Chaplain at Arbour Hill Prison. Provenance: Dr Alfred Rive (1898-1970); By descent to Mrs Victor Rickard, Cork; Private collection; Adam's, 7 December 2005, lot 138; Private collection Four years after this picture was painted, there was a dispute over a political appointment of a sub postmaster which became a national scandal. In 1950, James Everett, as Minister for Posts and Telegraphs became involved in a bizarre incident known as the "Battle of Baltinglass." Everett appointed Michael Farrell as sub-postmaster in the local post office. The office had been run by Helen Cooke for her invalid aunt, whose family had held the position since 1870. Local feeling ran high in support of Cooke, with telegraph poles being cut to prove their point. Allegations of political jobbery were denied but Everett's action became a national issue. Farrell resigned in December 1950 and Everett bowed to the pressure and appointed Cooke. It is believed that the Baltinglass affair contributed to the downfall of the Inter-Party government in 1951.

Fr. Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968) Flower Market watercolour signed lower left h:38  w:56.50 cm. Provenance: The Estate of the artist; Taylor Galleries, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection By the time Jack P. Hanlon was ordained in 1939, he already had a thriving career as an artist. Largely self-taught, like several of his contemporaries he did spend a short time at the atelier of Andre Lhote in Paris. Lhote's variety of Cubism was less extreme than that pioneered by Picasso and Braque, and more traditionally pictorial. That, and Post-Impressionism shaped Hanlon's personal style, which favoured light tonality and bright colour in addressing a wide variety of themes.

Provenance: De Vere's, Dublin, Irish Art Auction, 3rd October 2006, Lot 18; Private Collection Jack Hanlon was born in Dublin and following his education at Belvedere College and UCD he studied for the priesthood at Holy Cross College , Cloniffe and Maynooth College. Strongly influenced by his mother he had always an interest in art and his art training mainly involved the art of looking, as he spent time in France, Belgium and Spain where he visited galleries, museums and cathedrals looking for inspiration. His formal training consisted of a spell at the studio of Andre Lhote in Paris, where he met and was influenced by Henri Matisse whose fauvist style was similar in ways to his own. His work was included in an exhibition at the New York World Fair in 1939, the year he was ordained and from that year on he enjoyed a steady run of exhibitions. In 1940 he exhibited along with Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone, Norah McGuinness and others in a group show 'Six Irish Artists from L'Académie Lhote ' at the Contemporary Picture Galleries where he held a solo exhibition in 1943. His first solo show was at the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1941 and several others followed in 1946, 1948 and 1953. After the Waddington Gallery closed in Dublin he held solo shows with the Dawson Gallery in 1958, 1962 and 1965. He exhibited regularly with the Water Colour Society of Ireland, the Dublin Painters Gallery and at the annual Oireachtas art exhibitions. Hanlon was involved in setting up the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, sitting on the first executive committee in 1943 and exhibited with them frequently. He was very active on the committee until his death in 1968. During his lifetime he held solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Brussels and Curacao, Venezuela. In 1950 he was commissioned to create a mural for the Irish Pavillion at the Chicago World Fair and also completed one at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Cobh, Co. Cork. This was just one of his many ecclesiastical commissions. He executed numerous oils for churches around the country. This early work from 1943 is quite typical of Hanlon's work with its light pastel colour palette and Dufy style composition.

Fr. Jack P. Hanlon (1913-1968) Madonna and Child oil on canvas board h:50  w:35 cm. Provenance: George Montague Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection By the time Jack P. His Madonna and Child, with its references to mosaic, is a good example.

Fr. Jack P. Hanlon (1913 - 1968)French Market WomenOil on canvas board, 53.5 x 36.5cm (21 x 14å_)Signed and dated 1967Born in Dublin, Jack Hanlon studied for the priesthood at University College Dublin, Holy Cross and Maynooth College, but had begun exhibiting at the RHA at the age of twenty-one. His training mainly involved the art of looking, as he spent time in France, Belgium and Spain where he visited galleries, museums and cathedrals here he found inspiration. His formal training consisted of a spell at the studio of AndrÌ© Lhote in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse whose fauvist style was similar in ways to his own. 1939 was a significant year for Hanlon, as his work was included in an exhibition at the New York World Fair, and having completed his studies for the priesthood he was ordained. From that year on he enjoyed a steady run of exhibitions. From 1940 to 1968 he exhibited regularly with the Water Colour Society of Ireland, and had solo shows at the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1941, '46, '48 and '53. During the war years he also designed Christmas cards for Victor Waddington Publications. Hanlon was involved in setting up the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, sitting on the first executive commission in 1943 and exhibiting with them frequently. He was commissioned to create murals for the Irish Pavillion at the Chicago World Fair and also completed one at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Cobh, Co. Cork. This was just one of his ecclesiastical commissions. He executed numerous oils for churches around the country and in 1957 designed and supervised the production of vestments that were made by a group of seven Sisters of the Convent of Perpetual Adoration, which were then presented to Pope Pius XII by the Irish Government.
