        FRANK HAMPSON (BRITISH 1918-1985) CALLING COLONEL DARE! signed Frank Hampson lower right; numbered 2/4/1 beneath the mount lower right watercolour 47 x 36cm; 18 1/2 x 14 1/4in (unframed) Property of a Collector, West London Provenance A gift from the artist to the present owner Executed in 1951; art work for Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future for the cover of The Eagle vol. 2 no. 4. published on 4th May 1951. Hampson created the science fiction comic hero Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future in 1950, completing the art work and initially the story lines as well up until 1961. First published on the 14th April 1950, the strip was featured on the cover of the boys' comic The Eagle which was printed weekly, available every Friday. Dare's full name was Colonel Daniel McGregor Dare, chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet whose role was to protect planet Earth from the evil Mekon. Other characters who appeared in Hampson's stories included Digby, Dare's batman; Sir Hubert Guest, controller of the space fleet; Professor Jocelyn Peabody, the only leading female role, and the brains behind many of the most inventive missions, and Hank Hogan and Pierre Lafayette, an American and a Frenchman respectively.
