(73.7 x 62.9 cm) Good condition Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 A keen sense of the ridiculous – in art and in life – is often evident in the works British artist Charles Hammond. His deep thinking about art’s history and its place in the contemporary world is wonderfully present in these particular works. In the painting of ‘Bread Man’, the artist reinterprets the portrait work of the 16th century Italian painter, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who composed his royal portraits out of vegetables and fruit. Hammond presents his ‘Bread Man’ portrait in a loose painterly style animated by bread loaves. And similarly in the accompanying canvas of ‘Hungry Bureaucrat’ we can see spinning wheels and gears in a complex grid, the artist’s possible reinterpretation of a Leonardo Da Vinci sketch for a new invention. Charlie Hammond (British, b.1979) Hammond’s collaged paintings and objects often focus on the processes and materials of art making. Since his studies at the Buckinghamshire Chiltern University College and Glasgow School of Art, Hammond frequently undertakes two-person collaborative shows. His sectioned canvases and other understated and simultaneously ridiculous works have been shown in New York and across Europe, especially near his home base in Glasgow.
