    • ALEXANDER HAMMID (1907 - 2004) PORTRAIT OF MAYA DEREN. 1942, probably printed later.
      May. 14, 2022

ALEXANDER HAMMID (1907 - 2004) PORTRAIT OF MAYA DEREN. 1942, probably printed later.

      Est: $600 - $900

ALEXANDER HAMMID (1907 - 2004) PORTRAIT OF MAYA DEREN. 1942, probably printed later. 5 3/8 x 5 1/8 inch image. The print including margins is 8 x 7 inches. It is mounted on a textured 11 ½ inch sheet. Hammid was a photographer and a filmmaker. For a time he was married to Maya Deren. Together they made MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON, a masterpiece of experimental cinema. She is the most venerated artist in this personal genre. She was a performer, dancer, writer, and intellectual, among other roles. She appears in some of her films and her beautiful face dominates them, especially in MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON. This portrait resembles some of the images in that film. It is accompanied by 3 loose pages, same size as the sheet, numbered 54 of the 100 catalogs made for a Czech Exhibition in 2000 devoted to Hammid’s work. Hammid has signed on the bottom of the sheet beneath the photograph. There is an essay on one page. One page lists the 57 photographs in the exhibition, with dates. The Deren is one of the three with “Vintage Print” before the date. This presents a puzzle. Is this the “vintage print” that was in the exhibition? It looks much more recent. Whatever, it is a wonderful object for those who venerate Deren, and those interested in Hamid’s extensive career. Condition is excellent.

    • Maya Deren by Alexander Hammid. Experimental film artist.
      Jun. 16, 2016

Maya Deren by Alexander Hammid. Experimental film artist.

      Est: $600 - $1,000

ALEXANDER HAMMID, MAYA DEREN. 8 x 10 - inch toned gelatin silver print on heavy paper. This is a vintage 1945 print of Deren by her then husband who worked with her on the film "Meshes of the Afternoon," one of the founding influential films of the Post-WWII American avant-garde cinema. This is one of several portraits similar to the famous image of her in the film, but I haven't found another example of this particular pose. There is a darker horizontal band at the top that is part of the image. [3]
