JONATHAN HAMMER (Chicago, Illinois, 1960). "Landscape from Upper Inferno", 1997. Graphite coloured pencils and paper. With the label of the Fúcares gallery (Madrid) on the back.

      Est: €1,000 - €1,200

JONATHAN HAMMER (Chicago, Illinois, 1960). "Landscape from Upper Inferno", 1997. Graphite coloured pencils and paper. With the label of the Fúcares gallery (Madrid) on the back. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid. Size: 100 x 63 cm; 106 x 71 cm (frame). Close to illustration in terms of aesthetics, the piece shows two main characters holding toys. This naive idea of the drawing contrasts with the presence of the recumbent body in the lower area, the nudity of one of the main characters and the expressiveness of the faces. In the words of the author: "My interest in toys, clowns and monsters does not refer directly to childhood, what really fascinates me is the intensity of the values that we place in these objects and images. A doll or a cuddly toy is something "we love deeply". We adore that toy, and we mistreat it. We embrace it, and we murder it. Like the clown, at once innocent and menacing, toys are alternately victims and executioners. They are malevolent. They turn into monsters when they are loved too much. And yet these monsters also make us thrill and tremble: we love the excitement and the shivers of fear. Of American origin, Hammer moved to Spain in 2003 where he had a solo exhibition at the Galería F2 and at the Caja Negra in Madrid. Despite these exhibitions, he already had more than ten years of experience in his country, having exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Boston and Ohio. Throughout his career he has projected his work internationally, exhibiting in Germany, France, London and Japan, among others. France, London and Japan among others. His work is represented in numerous collections of great artistic prestige such as; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York Public Library, New York, Hammer Museum, UCLA, Los Angeles, University Art Museum, Berkeley, Jumex Collection, Mexico, Caldic Collection, Rotterdam, Marukawa Collection, Ashiya, Japan, Khalili Family Trust, London, Bernardaud Foundation, Paris, LA Gay and Lesbian Community Center, Los Angeles, Fundación Pilar i Joan Miro, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Dartmouth College, Hanover, and Yale University, New Haven among others.
