      John Hammer (1842 - 1906) Landscape. Signed lower right. Oil/Masonite. Sight Size: 21.5 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 27.5 x 23.5 in. Hammer studied at the National Academy of Design where he exhibited from 1870 to 1900. He exhibited a total of thirty paintings and watercolors. The subjects were romantic landscapes, genre scenes and poetic portraits of women and children. In 1870, Hammer recorded his address as 658 Broadway and then in 1900 he listed it as 53 East 58th street, New York City. In 1888, John Hammer exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. He exhibited a total of three works, "Gathering Flowers" (private collection, Chicago), and "Village near Munnich", 1888. In 1892 he exhibited a watercolor, "In Dry Dock". In both exhibitions, John listed his address as the University Bldg., Washington Square, New York City. John Johann Hammer exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art from 1884 to 1892. He also was a member of the Artists Guild of Author's League of America.
