      Est: £100 - £120

HAMLEY EDWARD: (1824-1893) British General and Military writer, served throughout the Crimean War as Aide-de-Camp to Colonel Sir Richard Dacres. A.L.S., Edward Hamley, four pages, 8vo, Palace Chambers, Ryder Street, London, 24th December 1890, to the traveller and writer Mrs. Gray Hill. Hemley states that he has just finished With the Bedouins and is anxious to tell her of his interest in the work, 'not only on account of the scenery and adventures, but it was a pleasure to read so well-told a narrative....The journeys I should most have liked to share in were the first, especially the part lying between the sea of Galilee and the coast....and that round by Philistia and the edge of the desert to Hebron. The most worthy of all the inhabitants that you met with was the one that had the saddest and most undeserved fate - Werdie - I was shocked to read of her end and wished I could be present at the execution (on the wheel) of her murderer. When you were riding the flowery fringes of the streams, you must have often used the same expression as Hero when her lover was swimming to her. If you can't guess it consult Mr. Rae. I hear you are to dine in his hospitable mansion tomorrow...' A couple of light, very minor ink stains to the first page, otherwise VG
