Here, tender moments from everyday life were rendered with exquisite shadows and light, demonstrating the artist's impressions. Some 37,000 tonnes of crude oil were spilled into the sea when the Exxon Valdez supertanker struck the Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef on March 24, 1989, endangering seals, sea otters, salmon and sea birds like the penguin. It was an environmental disaster with lasting effects even after a decade, with actual ecological recovery taking another two decades. Hamir Soib uses the Humboldt penguin, shown desperately gasping for life, as the victim symbol of threatened marine life in the area. This work was shown at the 'Art For Nature' fund-raiser for the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, with the theme 'Shifting Boundaries'. (Note: Another disastrous oil spill happened in 2010 in the Deepwater Horizon). Hamir Soib was a founding member of the Matahati group who was initially involved in stage and filming before going full-throttle into art when he set up The Gudang warehouse art-space in 2002. His earlier pursuits saw him clinch the Best Art Director award with Zuraini Anuar for Perempuan Melayu Terakhir in the 14th Malaysia Film Festival. He held his first solo in 2005 and won the Shah Alam Art Gallery's Incentive Prize. In 2007, he was a finalist in the Sovereign Art Award in Hong Kong. When still in school (Mara Institute of Technlogy) in 1990, he won a Consolation Prize in the Dokumentasi Kemiskinan competition.

Leadership is an opportunity to serve, it's not a trumpet call to self importance. But unfortunately, most of the time, leaders place their own interests and agendas higher than the nation's interests, advancing ruthlessly and greedily, neglecting the people's need. While they enrich themselves, many have suffered. What an epic journey that has devastated the country. 2018 was the year when the change of government took place, in which a deeply rooted party coalition was ousted. Hamir Soib, a late bloomer among the founding members of the cult Matahati group, is known for his works with sharp socio-political commentary about issues and events at home. For some, a nude body can be seen in the guitar body. Facing a hot body, temperature naturally rises, as shown in the thermometer well blended into the guitar neck. Hamir Soib (b. Johor, 1969) The Fake Human, 2007

          Est: RM30,000 - RM55,000

Nothing more literal than this, what with the banner reel shouting the epithets, The Fake Human,’ adding to the banality. Typical of Hamir Soib’s Malaysian Hans Christian Andersonian (over)dramatized play-stories, hinting on human nature and contemporary truths. The face is hideous, not wholly human but more like that of a bull with nose-chains and face straps. Monstrous, with animal features if not instincts, but having characteristics of homo sapiens. With such a grotesque bestial face (one could well find other faces entombed within), it is not certain whether the main figure is that of a villain or a victim. Or is it reflecting the ugly side of human characters? With the bitumen paint, Hamir Soib has run riot with narratives that can work on several levels, which begs the question: What is human? After graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991, he concentrated more on film and theatre productions, even winning Best Art Director (with Zuraini Anuar) for Perempuan Melayu Terakhir in the 14th Malaysian Film Festival. He founded The Gudang warehouse art space in 2002, and had his first solo in 2005. That year, he won the Incentive Award in the Shah Alam Open competition. He was a finalist in the Sovereign Art Award Hong Kong in 2007. He recently opened his studio for visit, showcasing his huge masterpiece which he had been working for months, and months.

Hamir Soib (b. Johor, 1969) Battle Of The Insider, 2010

          Est: RM20,000 - RM36,000

It’s a devastating blow to the hull, as thick billows of smoke rise amidst the fallen masts. The setting recalls the 18th or 19th century with the sepia tint of the bitumen providing the aura, and with the man-of-war in the foreground making a last-gasp stand before sinking into oblivion. A ship in the distance sailing towards viewer and coming from the blindside, glides in for the final kill. Human history is replete with the totality of Might, which is Right, the laws of the jungle. Naval superiority is inextricably tied to the glory of empires, which rise and fall on strategems and sometimes, the weather. The battle also reflects infighting within the political parties, certain communities, etc. Hamir Soib’s large canvases usually comment on Politics, Pollution, Corruption and Social Ills. In 2017, he held a solo called Small Works at the Segaris Art Center. He has also excelled as set designer for theatre and films and won Best Art Director for Perempuan Melayu Terakhir (in collaboration with Zuraini Anuar) in the Malaysian Film Awards in 1999. In 2005, he founded Gudang, an alternative space cum studio, which staged his first solo, Pameran Tunggal. Hamir was a Finalist in the Sovereign Art Prize in Hong Kong in 2007, and won the Galeri Shah Alam Young Incentive Award in 2005. He was an artist in residence at Malihom in 2007. His auction record was set at the April 2016 Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction for The Stitches, with a premium of approximately RM146,000.

          Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

This small and graceful painting represents the best qualities of Hamir Soib's work. Set atop a plain surface lies a porcelain bowl, dramatically positioned against a dark background. Though losing part of its charm due to various chips on the surface, the artist has emphasized the delicate nature and luminosity of the porcelain. The beauty in imperfection adds allure to the visually simple yet meaningful composition. The bowl shown here has a wide mouth with an intricate dragon motif depicted on the left. Through the intensity of the blue and elegant form, this striking image captures the viewer's attention with its bold color contrasts and effortless execution. A reluctance to relinquish the past seems to be the theme of this piece, based on the page numbers on the lower left and right (40 and 41), and the figure’s determined clinging onto the left page, refusing to budge and move on with life. As the page turns, we too can find ourselves in the position of the person in this artwork, refusing to say goodbye to the old us, and to live out the present. Hamir Soib, a late bloomer among the founding members of the cult Matahati group, is known for his works with sharp socio-political commentary about issues and events at home. There is a Malay proverb, Kalau Tak Ada Angin, Masakan Pokok Bergoyang (If there is no wind, the trees won’t sway). Knowing Hamir Soib@Mohamad’s socio-political bent in his works, Mind Blower may be about the ‘kabar angin’ (rumours) fabricated to deceptively sway people’s mind towards supporting or opposing certain issue or person. It’s something prevalent previously with the Malay ‘surat layang’ and now ‘false news’, the trial balloons and slanted news. It could also be taken to mean that ‘there is no fire, without smoke,’ that there is some justification to certain things happening. However, the classical mock-mythological veneer of the composition might also conjure a scene of a magic fantasy movie, perhaps Ray Harryhausen’s 1963 flick, Jason and the Argonauts, which set new standards in filmmaking with his revolutionary ‘Dynamation’ of ‘split-screen’ and ‘stop-motion’ techniques. Going by this same interpretation, the (Greek) god-like face blowing away what looks like ancient ships is the ‘Talos’ giant creature guarding the Golden Fleece, with the beach becoming a graveyard of shipwrecks and skeletons. The phrase, ‘mind-blower,’ is also known to be a hallucinogenic drug. Hamir Soib, a late bloomer among the founding members of the cult Matahati group, is known for his works with sharp socio-political commentary about issues and events at home. He founded The Gudang warehouse art space in 2002 and he held his first solo at The Gudang in 2005. He is also active in theatre and film productions, besides painting. Est: RM40,000 - RM60,000

So, that was Hamir Soib@Mohamad’s take on The Year That Was, a poser and challenge by Lim Wei-ling of the eponymous Wei-Ling Gallery to six artists on what they thought about the year (2008), that was just about to end. Their works were showcased at Wei-Ling Gallery in December 2008. The year, a leap year and the year of the Summer Olympics in China, is best remembered as the year of the 13th general election where (Tun) Abdullah Badawi Ahmad’s ruling Barisan National incumbent government barely scraped through, with a slim majority, and the handover of the Prime Ministership to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was set in motion. In Hamir’s work set against a dense series of dark spirals, a hard mould without a face and dismembered into three parts, dominated. While the head mould, made up either of wood or ceramic, does portend something bad – one is left to ponder if it refers to any individual – it is non-commital and detached, like someone broken looking out, to nowhere in particular. Thus, No(n) Sense, the title.Hamir Soib, a late bloomer among the founding members of the cult Matahati group, has shown a very sharp edge in his socio-political commentaries, related mostly to home. As the founder of The Gudang warehouse art space in 2002, he achieved much in visual art as well as theatre and film productions, where he concentrated his efforts on earlier. Such was that he won Best Art Director with Zuraini Anuar in Perempuan Melayu Terakhir in the 14th Malaysia Film Festival. Not surprising, it was at The Gudang that Hamir Soib made his first solo exhibition in 2005. That year, he also won the Incentive Award in the Shah Alam Gallery Open. Hamir was a finalist in the Sovereign Art Award Hong Kong in 2007. As a Matahati icon, he was from the same ‘Class of ‘91’ graduation from the Universiti ITM.
