Letitia Hamilton, known as May to her family and friends, was born at Hamwood House, near Dunboyne Co. Meath and was the younger sister of Eva H. Hamilton and a cousin of Rose Barton. Described by Hilary Pyle as a typical 'horse Protestant', she enjoyed a privileged start in life: educated at Alexandra College. She studied art under Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School, partly, no doubt, through the influence of her elder cousin Rose, then an established professional artist. In Belgium she studied with Sir Frank Brangwyn; further study ensued at the Slade in London. She began exhibiting with the Watercolour Society of Ireland in 1902, showing mostly garden scenes in the manner of Mildred Anne Butler, a family friend. Hamilton showed her first painting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1909 rarely missing an exhibition there for the rest of her life. In 1910 she painted in northern France and is thought to have then encountered the work of the Impressionists. She was a founder member of the Society of Dublin Painters in 1920. Her first recorded visit to the West of Ireland was in 1922, when she took a house in Sligo in order to paint. In 1929 she first showed a Connemara landscape at the RHA, but it was not until 1942 that Roundstone began to figure among her painting subjects. In that year she exhibited three Roundstone scenes at the RHA and further works followed every year or two thereafter throughout the forties and fifties. She held an exhibition with her sister in 1924 in Dublin showing scenes of Venice where she was later to have a studio. She travelled extensively and was rather unusual as an artist-traveller in the fact that she rarely used pencil or watercolour or any other light, easily transportable media, opting instead for the more cumbersome canvas and oil paint. In her later work she used an increasingly thick impasto applying the paint with a palette knife. She was appointed an associate of the RHA in 1934 becoming a full member ten years later.

Letitia Marion Hamilton (1878-1964) - Original Watercolour Letitia Marion Hamilton (30 July 1878 – 11 August 1964) was an Irish landscape artist and Olympic bronze medallist. Hamilton first exhibited in 1902, she would go on to become a prolific painter of the Irish countryside, exhibiting more than 200 paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). Letitia was heavily influenced by modern European artistic trends of the early 20th-century. Hamilton was internationally exhibited, Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington Gallery and Kensington Art Gallery in London, in Scotland, and Paris. Her exposure to impressionism came from studying with Anne St John Partridge in France. Hamilton's style matured in the 1920s. That year, she was one of the founding members of the Society of Dublin Painters, It was around this time that she changed her signature from MH (May Hamilton) to LMH, reflecting her full name. In the early 1920s, Hamilton travelled to Venice, painting on a gondola studio lent to her by artist and friend Ada Longfield. The works from this trip are considered amongst her best, with her exploring light effects, pastel shades, and strong outlines. Hamilton later employed these elements into her works on Irish landscapes. She became a member of the RHA in 1943. In 1948 she became the last person to win a bronze medal at the art competitions at the London Olympic Games. Hamilton served as president of the Society of Dublin Painters in the late 1950s. Despite her failing eyesight later in life, Hamilton continued to paint, mounting her final exhibition in 1963, a year before her death. She was also a committee member of the Water Colour Society of Ireland. Examples of Hamilton's work are held in a number of collections, including Hugh Lane Gallery, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Crawford Art Gallery, Ulster Museum, National Gallery of Ireland, and Waterford Art Gallery. Her painting Canal Scene In Venice attained the highest price for a Hamilton work in 2004, which sold at Sotheby's, in London, for £33,600. This painting is an extremely good Print. We actually had to take it out of the frame to determine it.....the dot matrix is so fine. It is a lovely old Vintage print in period mid century frame. The artwork measures 52cm wide by 45cm high.

Provenance: Private Collection In this view of Glengarriff and the Caha mountains, seen from Garnish Island in Bantry Bay, Letitia Marion Hamilton demonstrates her skill in capturing effects of sunlight and rain, as clouds sweep across the West Cork landscape. As in many of her landscapes, a group of trees in the foreground frames the composition. Hamilton has used palette knife as well as brush to apply colours directly to the canvas, with the result that Bantry Bay, from Glengarriff is light in tone, with bright colours and expressive handling of paint. Together with her sister Eva, Letitia Marion Hamilton spent her life painting, traveling and exhibiting. The two sisters did not marry and, with their dedication to art, went on to become known as 'The Hamwood Ladies'. After attending Alexandra College, in 1907 Hamilton enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Art, where she studied under William Orpen. She and her sister then moved to London, where Hamilton attended Chelsea Polytechnic, and also studied under Frank Brangwyn. She first exhibited at the RHA in 1909 and thereafter showed regularly at the Academy, being elected a member in 1943. In 1920, while living at Palmerstown, she was a founding member of the Society of Dublin Painters. Five years later, she exhibited at the Paris Salon. She also showed work in London; at the Goupil Gallery, the RA and the Fine Art Society. Provenance: Private Collection Depicting perhaps the most famous of the Mourne Mountains, seen between two gnarled and ancient trees, Slieve Donard, Co. Down is one of Letitia Marion Hamilton's most accomplished works. The painting conveys a sense of vitality, the bare branches of the trees forming a Japanese-style pattern in the grey sky, above the distant mountain top. A label on the back provides useful information on both artist and painting. Describing Hamilton as 'ARHA' indicates it was painted between 1934, when she was elected an associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and a decade later, when she became a full member. The address locates her as living at Dunsinea Castle Tower, Dublin. This is most likely Dunsinea House at Scribblestown, near Dunsink Observatory, now the Teagasc Food Research Centre. A painter whose style reveals the influence of French artists of the 1930's, and of Raoul Dufy in particular, Letitia Marion Hamilton (1878-1964) was one of a generation of Irish women from relatively privileged backgrounds who turned to art as a profession. Her paintings are bright and breezy, combining the light palette of impressionism with an essentially nineteenth-century Realist approach to subject matter. Together with her older sister Eva, she spent her life painting, traveling and exhibiting. The two sisters did not marry and, with their genteel lifestyle and dedication to art, became known as 'The Hamwood Ladies'. The daughter of Charles Robert Hamilton and Louise Brooke, Letitia was born into a family of ten, at Hamwood House in Co. Meath. After attending Alexandra College, she enrolled as a student at the Metropolitan School of Art, as did Eva. The sisters then moved to London, where Letitia studied for a time under Anne St. John Partridge (1860-1836) at the Chelsea Polytechnic and also under Frank Brangwyn. She first showed at the RHA in 1909, submitting a view of her local village, Dunboyne, and thereafter exhibited regularly at the Academy. After the death of their father in 1913, Letitia and her mother and sisters lived at the family's Dublin townhouse, 40 Lower Dominick Street, but three years later they moved to Monasterevin, in Co. Kildare. By 1920, when Letitia was one of the founder members of the Society of Dublin Painters, the family were living at Font Hill in Palmerstown, close to Dublin. Letitia spent time in Sligo, painting West of Ireland landscapes but also travelled extensively on the Continent, particularly in Italy and Yugoslavia. In 1924, at the invitation of Ada Longfield, the two sisters spent the year in Venice, the first of several visits. During this period, Letitia began to paint using a palette knife. She exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1925, and also in London, at the Goupil, Walker's and French galleries, as well as showing with the RA, RSBA and the Fine Art Society, and winning a bronze medal at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, for her painting of a Meath Hunt point-to-point race. Perched on a hill overlooking the town and dating from the sixteenth century onwards, Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora Nazare) cathedral and its associated buildings commemorate a miracle of the twelfth century when a knight was saved from falling to his death by the intervention of the Virgin Mary, thus starting the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré. The main front of the cathedral-that depicted in Hamilton's painting-dates from the early eighteenth century. It is still a place of pilgrimage today. In Hamilton's painting, three women, two carrying pots or containers on their heads, stand in the shade of large palm trees, escaping the intense midday sun. The large palm trees dominate the composition, along with the twin towers of the Cathedral and the red tiled roofs of the surrounding building. Leading to the door of the cathedral is a flight of semi-circular steps. The paving is depicted by Hamilton using vigorous brush marks of grey and light brown paint. Combining an Impressionist palette with the influence of Raoul Dufy and the School of Paris, Letitia Marion Hamilton was one of a generation of Irish women in the early twentieth century who turned to art as a profession, rather than a recreation. She delighted in depicting everyday scenes in Ireland such as fairs and race meetings, while her travels on the Continent resulted in paintings that are vibrant and colourful. Together with her sister Eva Henrietta (1876-1960) Letitia spent her life painting, traveling and exhibiting. The two sisters did not marry and, with their genteel lifestyle and dedication to art, became known as 'The Hamwood Ladies'. After attending Alexandra College, during which time she probably took painting lessons with John Butler Yeats, Letitia began exhibiting with the Water Colour Society of Ireland. In 1907, she became a student at the Metropolitan School of Art, studying under William Orpen, with her sister Eva shortly afterwards also enrolling at the same school. The two sisters then moved to London, where Letitia studied for a time under Anne St. John Partridge (1860-1836) at the Chelsea Polytechnic and also under Frank Brangwyn. She first showed at the RHA in 1909, submitting a view of her local village, Dunboyne, and thereafter exhibited regularly at the Academy, eventually being elected a member in 1943. By 1920, when Letitia was one of the founder members of the Society of Dublin Painters, the family were living at Palmerstown, close to Dublin. Letitia spent time in Sligo, painting West of Ireland landscapes but also travelled on the Continent, particularly in Italy and Yugoslavia. She exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1925, and also in London, at the Goupil, Walker's and French galleries, as well as showing with the Royal Academy and the Fine Art Society. When Cloch na Rón, The Stone of the Seals, became Roundstone, something was clearly lost in translation but the beauty and the charm of the place have never been lost. When Letitia Hamilton painted Roundstone, which she did a number of times, she captured Roundstone's unique setting and beauty, unique in that it was founded by Alexander Nimmo, a Scottish engineer, who built roads and harbours along the west coast of Ireland in the 1820s. Nimmo, choosing the spot for its spectacular views, designed and created Roundstone's harbour and, ever since, the village has been a favourite subject for artists including Paul Henry, Jack B Yeats, Gerard Dillon, Nano Reid. From Roundstone's main street, bordering the sea, you can view the Maamturk mountains. From there, you can also see the Twelve Bens. William Makepeace Thackeray visited Roundstone while it was still being built and in his book, published as The Irish Sketch Book in 1843, he wryly noted that the Presbyterian chapel in Roundstone was big enough 'to accommodate all the Presbyterians in Ireland' and described the Franciscan monastery as 'an unpretending little dwelling'. His eye was also captured by '[a] few figures at work in the bog-lands, a red petticoat passing here and there, a goat or two browsing among the stones, or a troop of whitey-brown children, who came out to gaze at the car form the chief society of the road'. Letitia Marion Hamilton, RHA, was born in 1878 in Hamwood House, Dunboyne, Co. Meath, built in 1779 by her ancestor Charles Hamilton. Though she studied under William Orpen, her travels in France, Belgium and Holland and the art she saw there influenced her more. In the 1920s Hamilton visited Italy and Yugoslavia but WWII kept her in Ireland and it was during that time that she began to paint Roundstone. In this particular work Hamilton captures the many delightful aspects of the place. The chosen perspective, of the approach to the town, invites the viewer to follow the road and to enjoy the sea. The day is bright, the shadows suggest afternoon. Rows of houses on the side of the road are crowded together and the road, sea wall, harbour and sky share a muted palette. Clouds and street and buildings, in greys and pale beige, are rendered with those gentle, sensuous, impastoed brushstrokes and palette knife so distinctively Letitia Marion Hamilton. Brighter colours, the green among the rocks in the foreground, the darker green hill and trees behind St Mary's Protestant church and the sea's blue gradations and the small white waves gently breaking provide a lovely contrast and though it's a calm, quiet scene there are some lively and busy touches. On the road through the village, a figure on a horse or donkey and two wooden horse-drawn carts create movement. One empty-looking cart is heading towards us, the other, piled high with turf, is heading up the hill. A lightly-sketched figure, a child probably, is seen on the right by the second cart. In the bay the figure in the row boat provides more movement and the eye is here drawn in a different direction. Inishnee island in Roundstone bay is briefly glimpsed and, beyond that, a stretch of water and, in the distance, on the horizon, more of the County Galway coastline. Hamilton frequently painted in a little van and for this scene it seems she is parked by the old dispensary house, renamed The Fort, on the way into Roundstone where Kate O'Brien lived in the 1950s, later Sting, and the house is now owned by Bill Whelan who says that in Roundstone you're 'so much more conscious of things like the tides and sunrise and sunset'. Over the years Roundstone has always attracted creative individuals and this work by LMH, undated, like much of Hamilton's work, but most likely from the 1940s, captures tide and sunshine and reminds us of Roundstone's unique attractiveness then. Provenance: Artist's original label verso; Private Collection In this painting of a country road, on the edge of Dunmanus Bay, looking north towards the Sheep's Head peninsula, a woman, dressed in the traditional black 'Kinsale' cloak, walks beside a donkey. There are other figures on the road, in the distance. Deep shadows, bright hills and blue cloudy skies speak of a summer's day in West Cork, with lush vegetation and the red dash of fuchsia flowering by the wayside. Hamilton's keen sense of colour is evident in the delicate tonalities of the blue mountains and clouds, contrasting with the rich brown and green fields in the foreground. Hamilton often stayed with her niece Honor, who lived at Ahakista, a village on the northern shore of Dunmanus Bay, about four miles west of Durrus. The area is one of great natural beauty; the climate is sub-tropical and there are a number of famous gardens in the area, including Garnish Island.
