EDWARD WILBUR DEAN HAMILTON (American, 1864-1943) Portrait of Edith Wayne (Seated Lady in Profile), 1904 Oil on canvas 36-1/4 x 29-1/4 inches (92.1 x 74.3 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Wilbur D. Hamilton / 1904 PROVENANCE: Sale: Samuel T. Freeman & Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 7, 2003, lot 166; Private collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, acquired from the above. Edith Wayne (1899-1973) was the great-great-great granddaughter of General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a hero of Revolutionary War fame. Born into a privileged Philadelphia family and educated in Europe, Edith Wayne entered society not long after she sat for this portrait by Boston School painter, Edward Dean Hamilton, who exhibited regularly in Wayne's hometown at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts exhibitions. On May 5, 1912, when the New York Times announced her engagement to prominent Philadelphia attorney, Thomas Ridgway, Sr., Edith Wayne was reported as having been a bridesmaid in the English wedding of Margaretta Drexel to Viscount Maidstone. The Times noted that the London papers had described the young debutante as "the purest type of American beauty ever seen in London," a quality Hamilton perfectly captured in his portrait of her.

Poppy Fields Signed "E.W.D. Hamilton" l.l. and l.r., inscribed and dated "...89" l.l., label from T. Gilbert Brouillette Gallery, New York, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 60.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Especially known for his landscape and garden views, Hamilton spent most of his artistic life in and around the Boston area. He spent 1887 through 1889 training in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jules Eli Delaunay and the Academie Julian, under the tutelage of Bouguereau. He exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1889, the date of the lot presented here, to 1891.By 1892 he had a studio in Boston, although he traveled periodically, summering regularly in New Brunswick, and returning to France several times. Poppy Fields unifies the strongest elements of his style: his exposure to the Paris of the Impressionists and his life long affiliation, as both student and teacher, with the Boston circle of painters.
