Artists N-Z Alex Hamilton – South Africa - Alex Hamilton – South Africa

Alex lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. His signature Pop Art-style, stencilled artworks of famous icons has been celebrated around the world.

Born in South Africa in 1969, Alex studied Textile Design from 1988 to 1990.

He has been a full-time artist since 1993. In 1997 he opened his own gallery –Bang the Gallery – specialising in promoting young, emerging artists and Pop Art. He closed Bang in 2002 to concentrate on his own work.

Hamilton has exhibited extensively in Europe with solo exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Ireland and Australia. He also formed a professional relationship with Knysna Fine Art and has, to date, presented six solo exhibitions at the various venues of this gallery.

In 2005, Hamilton moved into his first studio-with-gallery. Here he developed his signature stencil Street/Pop Art style and has created a staggering 2000-plus individual, hand-cut stencil portraits of famous global icons.
These icons range from great statesmen such as Nelson Mandela (seen below) to 80s pop idol Madonna, to historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi or Che Guevara.
He has since diversified the portrait theme into landscape and architectural layered stencil studies.

Currently situated in a massive studio/gallery in the über-arty suburb of Woodstock, Cape Town, he hosts solo and informal group exhibitions with emerging artists. These group events are called the ‘Margarita Night Mash-Ups’, providing a platform for independent and alternative artists to exhibit their work.
