          Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Theora Hamblett (American/Mississippi, 1895-1977), "Red Rooster Atop the Chicken Coop", 1977, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 16 in. x 19 7/8 in., framed, overall 16 11/16 in. x 20 5/8 in. x 1 3/8 in. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, 1977. Note: Renowned for her self-taught painting style, Theora Hamblett became one of Mississippi’s most celebrated and distinguished artists. Hamblett began her professional career late in life at the age of fifty-five, eschewing the abstract style popular at the time in favor of subjects more personal. Over the ensuing twenty-two years, she developed an extraordinary oeuvre that is as unique as it is powerful. Many of Hamblett’s paintings concentrated on her childhood memories, especially of the chicken farm in Paris, Mississippi where she spent her childhood. In nearly all her landscape paintings, she included animals or people, with the belief that those additions gave life to the scenes. She also painted many landscapes that featured children playing games to evoke a sense of nostalgia. After an accident which broke her hip and required surgery in 1954, Hamblett began to paint her dreams and visions, many with religious themes and elements. The same year, New York gallery owner and famous collector, Betty Parsons, discovered Hamblett's work and subsequently one of her paintings was included in a 1955 show of new acquisitions at the Museum of Modern Art. Hamblett’s paintings have two main hallmarks that set them apart – pattern and color. Almost obsessively flat areas of color off-set by the equally flat subjects are in dramatic contrast to her distinctive and highly patterned trees. The effect of the foliage evokes movement, as each leaf is individually painted resulting in layers of color. Hamblett was a lifelong resident of Lafayette County in Mississippi, and upon her death in 1977, she willed most of her collection of paintings to the University of Mississippi, making them rare to the market today. Theora Hamblett "Three Marys" #2 1968 Painting

          Est: $10 - $100,000

Theora Hamblett (1895-1977) "Three Marys" #2 1968 Oil On Canvas Painting. This painting is one of Theora's "Dreams and Visions" paintings. The meaning behind the painting is mentioned on pg. 40 of her book, "Dreams and Visions," published 1975 in collaboration with Edwin E. Meek. A photograph of a very similar painting titled, "Three Madonnas No. 20," is on page 41. Included with this painting is Dr. Larry Ray's personal copy of "Dreams and Visions." This painting came about as a result of a vision Hamblett had where she saw clouds flying around two faces and a center image that was revealed when the clouds withdrew. Theora was said to have never sold a painting until she fully understood the message God was conveying to her through the painting. Painting with frame measures 19" X 25". Theora was born in Paris, Mississippi, January 15, 1895. Her father Samuel was a Civil War veteran, who was 72 years old when Theora was born. Hamblett painted from an early age, but in 1955 became serious about painting. One of her early works "The Vision" was exhibited in New York at The Museum of Modern art in 1955. Provenance; Dr Larry Ray, Professor of Art Lambuth University, Jackson Tennessee. Dr. Ray hosted a February 1968 exhibit of Theora's works at Lambuth and purchased this painting from her. The exhibit is listed on page 13 of "Theora Hamblett Paintings" University of Mississippi Press 1975. Hamblett's paintings have been part of some of the most prominent collections in the world including The Nelson Rockefeller Collection, Sir Alex Guiness, Chase Manhattan Bank, United States Embassies, Betty Parsons Gallery, Lee and Pup McCarty and others. Theora Hamblett's paintings are exhibited at The Morris Museum of Art and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The University of Mississippi Museum maintains Hamblett's archive, including six hundred of her paintings. Her works have been exhibited at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The American Visionary Museum, The Walter Anderson Museum of Art, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Art and Lauren Rogers Museum. Condition- Painting is in very stable condition with some craquelure. Frame has some wear and losses and is basically a very simple thin strip of wood attached to the stretcher. See photos.

Hamblett was a lifelong resident of Lafayette County in Mississippi, and upon her death in 1977, she willed most of her collection of paintings to the University of Mississippi, making them rare to the market today. The significant painting offered here entitled “Children’s Playground” from 1955 is a masterful example of Hamblett’s intricate brushwork and saturated palette - highly reminiscent of her 1952 painting “Path and Pasture” which holds the auction record for her work. In “Children’s Playground,” Hamblett’s figures balance precariously on a large, felled tree, with boys and girls perched on the exposed stump and fallen trunk. The immense scale of the tree and exquisite technicolor sky embody childhood fantasy, and this painting, more so than any other canvas by the artist that has been offered at auction, poignantly captures the vibrant, imaginative magic of children immersed in play.

Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist. Note: Theora Hamblett began her professional career late in life, eschewing the abstract style popular at the time in favor of subjects more personal. After an accident that broke her hip and required surgery in 1954, Hamblett began to paint her dreams and visions. The same year, New York gallery owner and famous collector, Betty Parsons, discovered Hamblett's work and subsequently one of her paintings was included in a 1955 show of new acquisitions at the Museum of Modern Art. Many of Hamblett’s paintings concentrated on her early memories, especially of the chicken farm in Paris, Mississippi where she spent her childhood. In nearly all of her landscape paintings, she included animals or people, with the belief that these additions gave life to the scenes. A charming family of goats surrounded by Hamblett’s iconic trees take center stage in the rare and mature work offered here. Hamblett’s minimalist style is abstract, yet representational, with the highly patterned trees vibrating with tiny leaves, made all the more kinetic by being placed between the field of solid gold surrounding the goats and the bright blue Mississippi sky. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, c. 1960s. Note: Renowned for her self-taught painting style, Theora Hamblett has become one of Mississippi’s most celebrated artists. Although paint was her primary medium, Hamblett occasionally experimented in other media, including glass and Texstone Gravel, a type of crushed glass sold by the bag in twelve colors. Hamblett used the Texstone Gravel to create mosaic-style works, which she would then coat with a poured plastic to seal the gravel in place. Hamblett worked with Texstone and glass only few times because of the fumes created, making the works offered here extremely rare. Hamblett painted many religious scenes throughout her life, illustrating the visions and dreams that came to her, as well as Biblical stories such as Christ and the Apostles, the Madonna, and the life of St. Peter. In her Texstone works, she continued this theme with a Madonna made from both gravel and tiles, as well as a Star of David, which Hamblett referred to as “The Creator’s Star.” The gravel’s texture in these works serves to link her mixed media work to her paintings, mimicking the style of Hamblett’s tiny brush strokes. Theora Hamblett (American/Mississippi, 1895-1977), "Girl at the Duck Pond", 1974, oil on canvas board, signed and dated lower right, 10 in. x 8 in., framed. Note: Theora Hamblett began her professional career late in life, dismissing the abstract style popular at the time for something more personal and unique. Many of Hamblett’s paintings concentrated on her childhood memories, especially of the chicken farm in Paris MS where she spent her childhood. In nearly all of her landscape paintings, she included animals or people, with the belief that those additions gave life to the scenes. She also painted many landscapes that featured children playing games to evoke a sense of nostalgia. After an accident that broke her hip and required surgery in 1954, she began to paint her dreams and visions, with many of her visions showing religious scenes. The same year, New York gallery owner and famous collector, Betty Parsons, discovered Hamblett's work and subsequently one of her paintings was included in a 1955 show of new acquisitions at the Museum of Modern Art. In "Girl at the Duck Pond" offered here, the scene showcases two of Hamblett’s hallmarks – pattern and color. Almost obsessively flat areas of color off-set by the equally flat subjects are in drastic contrast to the highly patterned trees. The resulting effect of the foliage evokes movement and accentuates the background, drawing the eye to the key figures of the girl and ducks. Ref.: Wertkin, Gerard, ed.
