Dr. Albert C. Hall Photomontage by Philippe Halsman, Ex. Famous Photographer's Schools

    Est: $300 - $400

Philippe Halsman [Westport, CT], n.d. Dr. Albert C. Hall Photomontage by Philippe Halsman, Ex. Famous Photographer's Schools Photograph An oversized photomontage by famed photographer Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) depicting Dr. Albert C. Hall, engineer and later Assistant Secretary of Defense. 1p, 10.75" x 13.5", [Westport, CT], undated. This image, included in the textbooks of courses that Halsman taught at the Famous Photographers Schools (FPS), has been docketed on the mat below with lesson and page number, among other specifications. Featuring stamp of the FPS at lower left verso. Evident residue present to lower left of photograph, with light edge wear and bumping to corners. Expected handling marks to outside mat, measuring 12.25" x 17" overall. Very good condition. Dr. Albert C. Hall (1914-1992), a pioneer in the field of automatic control and servomechanisms, is perhaps most well-known for his work on the country's first computer-controlled production tool. This tool, a profiling mill, was in operation for many years after its installation at Martin Marietta's Baltimore aerospace factory in 1957. He later worked for Martin Marietta as a director of engineering, where he helped in the development of rockets Titan I & II. In 1971, Hall's experience allowed him to become the first assistant secretary of defense for intelligence during the height of the Cold War. Provenance: This photograph comes directly from the archive of the Famous Photographers School, founded in 1961 and directed by renowned photographer Victor Keppler. It gathered as faculty the ten most famous American photographers of its time: Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Alfred Eisenstadt, Bert Stern, Richard Beattie, Philippe Halsman, Joseph Costa, Ezra Stoller, Harry Gardner and others. Margaret Bourke-White served as faculty advisor. Each photographer created works exclusively for the school textbooks, as well as illustrating the lessons with some of their most famous photographs. Most of the prints we offer here are stamped with page numbers corresponding to their placement in the books. Some even include detailed handwritten notations giving details on techniques. These prints were kept in file drawers following the dissolution of the school in the mid-seventies. The images we offer here come directly from the photographers' studios. These works are the actual prints used to create iconic images featured in issues of LIFE, Time, Vogue, and so many other publications, and created long before limited-edition portfolios with signed examples of the photographers' works were offered widely. The Famous Photographers School Archive was purchased by a Connecticut photography expert. While much of it was then acquired by the Yale University Art Gallery in 2016, the original purchaser retained a small collection, which are now offered by University Archives. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. WE PROVIDE IN-HOUSE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE! #SpaceAstronaut

PHILIPPE HALSMAN (Riga, 1906 - New York, 1979). "Untitled (Reflection)," c. 1940. Silver gelatin photograph. Stamped on the back "Copyright by Philippe Halsman". Measurements: 20.5 x 21 cm; 31.5 x 29 cm (frame). Halsman studied electrical engineering in Dresden, after being accused of the murder of his father, he spent two years in prison. Upon his release Halsman decided to move to France, where he began contributing to fashion magazines such as Vogue and soon earned a reputation as one of France's top portrait photographers. Famous for his sharp rather than soft-focus, tightly cropped images. When France was invaded by Germany, Halsman fled to Marseille. He eventually managed to obtain an American visa, with the help of his family friend Albert Einstein, whom he later photographed in 1947. Halsman had his first success in the United States when the cosmetics firm Elizabeth Arden used his image of model Constance Ford against the American flag in an advertising campaign for "Victory Red" lipstick. A year later, in 1942, he found work at Life magazine, photographing hat designs; In 1941 Halsman met surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and they began collaborating in the late 1940s. The 1948 work Dalí Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three cats flying, a bucket of water thrown and Dalí in the air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí's work Leda Atomicus, which can be seen to the right of the photograph behind the two cats. Halsman and Dalí eventually published a compendium of their collaborations in the 1954 book Dali's Moustache, which features 36 different views of the artist's distinctive mustache. Another famous collaboration between the two was In Voluptas Mors, a surrealist portrait of Dalí next to a large skull, in fact a tableau vivant composed of seven nudes. In 1947 Halsman took what would become one of his most famous photos of a mournful Albert Einstein, who during the photo shoot recounted his regret over his role in the United States pursuing the atomic bomb. The photo would later be used in 1966 on a U.S. postage stamp and, in 1999, on the cover of Time magazine, when it called Einstein the "Person of the Century." In 1951, NBC commissioned Halsman to photograph several popular comedians of the era, including Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx and Bob Hope. The photographer developed a philosophy of jump photography, which he called jumpology. He published Philippe Halsman's Jump Book in 1959, which contained a tongue-in-cheek discussion of jumpology and 178 photographs of famous jumpers.
