The first of three titles in the Aino Fairy Tale Series, intended as a supplement to the Japanese Fairy Tale Series, focussed on the myths of the northern Ainu people. Though there was a good amount of Western interest in the Ainu at this time, the series did not sell well and was discontinued.

(all pl. with library stamp on verso). - 1st edition and marvellous account of a British naval expedition accompanying the Amherst Embassy to the Qing court in 1816. With early descriptions of visits to Korea that had been only sketchily explored and to the Ryukyu Archipelago, that was for the 1st time described in detail. BASIL HALL (1788-1844) British naval officer, traveler, and author. He was one of the first to visit Korea and wrote "Voyage of Discovery to Corea" (1818). A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Edinburgh, March 30, 1824 to "M[ichael?] Faraday Esqr." in London. In part: "…I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter…stating that the Committee of the new Club, called The Society, had directed you to inquire whether it is my wish to become a member…I beg leave to signify the great pleasure I shall have in belonging to a Society as constituted…" Laid down. Very good condition.

Havell, one uncoloured aquatint, 5 engraved maps (2 folding) and one engraved plate. (Wanting half-title, occasional light spotting, as usual, more severe to preliminaries, some light offsetting from plates.) Later half morocco, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt (boards slightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. Hall sailed with Lord Amherst's embassy to China in 1816 and once there went on to explore the East China and Yellow Seas. His narrative includes observations of the people and culture, and is followed by extensive appendices including a seventy-two-page vocabulary of the Loochoo language. On his return journey Hall had an interview at St. Helena with Napoleon who had known his father, Sir James Hall. Abbey records that The Edinburgh Review greeted the book with much enthusiasm: 'We do not know when we have met with a more pleasing work than this delightful account of the people of Loo-Choo... His narrative includes his observations of the people and culture, as well as a vocabulary of the Loochoo language and an appendix containing charts and nautical notices. On his return journey, he had an interview at St. Helena with Napoleon, who had known his father, Sir James Hall, when the two were school mates, and describes his meeting in later editions. 3 vols. 421; 432; 436, [9] pp. Illustrated with a folding frontispiece hand-colored map showing Hall's travel route, in Volume I; folding table in the back of Volume III. 7 1/2 x4 1/2, bound in period 1/4 calf & marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, marbled edges. Third Edition. Published only one year after the first edition. Hall, a captain in the Royal Navy, traveled to North America in 1828, including Quebec, Pennsylvania, New York and the New England states, New Orleans, the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys. In his southern route, Hall describes visits to various plantations, Creek Indian ceremonies, slavery practices, etc. From that, Hall was not impressed with what he saw. "Accustomed to a better-disciplined society and bred in the exacting traditions of the British Navy, he found difficulty in adjusting himself to the democratic manners and rude accommodations he found in the United States, both North and South. Nevertheless, he was a clear and forceful writer, and his work contains many excellent descriptions of places and conditions that came under his observation" - Clark III, 48; Howes H47; Sabin 29725.
