Hagel studied at the Vienna and Munich Academy. The versatile talented artist worked from 1913 as an illustrator for books and magazines. He designed some together with the architect P. L. Troost luxury liners from the Lloyd company and was also able to worked as a successful set designer. In 1930 he returned to his native city of Vienna, where he was active until 1938, after that he worked in great seclusion. Alfred Hagel's graceful and elegant scenes from the 1920s and 1930s exude a very unique charm, depicting the sunny side of life in an imaginative way.
