  • 1930s Edward Hagedorn Drawing of Kwakiutl Totem
    Jun. 01, 2023

1930s Edward Hagedorn Drawing of Kwakiutl Totem

    Est: $1,600 - $2,500

Edward Hagedorn (American, 1902-1982). Mixed media drawing of Kwakiutl totem, ca. 1930s. A large-scale drawing of a totem pole erected by the Kwakiutl peoples of the Bella Coola River valley by American artist Edward Hagedorn. The drawing features several totemic animals - most prominently the bear at the pinnacle - embellished with red and green hues which traditionally are the two most important and favored colors in Pacific Northwestern native artwork. Notes to the right read, "Bella Coola Bilquola Kwakiutl" with "Bilquola" crossed out. A wonderful drawing by Hagedorn, hinged within a custom matte. Size (drawing): 25" L x 15.75" W (63.5 cm x 40 cm) Size (matte): 32.1" L x 18.1" W (81.5 cm x 46 cm) About the artist: Edward Hagedorn was born in Oakland, California. Sadly, his mother died during childbirth; his maternal grandmother and his aunt raised him. Hagedorn attended the California School of Fine Arts from 1923 to 1926 and moved to New York around 1930. He was awarded honors by the Pennsylvania Academy of Art as well as the Brooklyn Museum. Interestingly, after he received a handsome inheritance, Hagedorn stopped exhibiting. His work has been collected by important institutions including Brooklyn Museum of Art; Chicago Art Institute; Library of Congress; Oakland Museum; San Diego Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Solo exhibitions have included: M. H. DeYoung Memorial Art Museum (September - October 1938); San Francisco Museum of Art (April 7 -23, 1941); Couturier Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (1994); University of California, Berkeley Art Museum (July 15 - August 20, 1995); Salisbury State College, Salisbury, Maryland (October 11 - November 3, 1996); and Danforth Art Museum, Framingham, Massachusetts (March 16 - May 15, 2016). Northwest Coast Legends about the Bear: Various Northwest Coast legends tell of a bear abducting a Chief's daughter. According to the story, this woman of high status had been out in the woods picking berries, when she stepped on some bear dung and cursed aloud, insulting the bear's cleanliness. Two nearby bears who heard her were upset and decided to teach her a lesson. One bear magically transformed himself into a dashing young man who approached this woman, and convinced her to accompany him to his mountain house. Upon falling in love with him, she too became partially bear-like. The two married and had twin cubs - born resembling bears but could metamorphose themselves into a human form just like their father. When the woman's brothers found her, they retaliated by killing her husband. They all then returned to the village, only the two bear sons felt out of place and eventually returned to the forest. All Bear Clan members are said to descend from this woman and her two sons. Hence, it is believed that there is a bear within every one of us, and that we must accept and embrace this in our lives. • Edward Hagedorn Drawing - African Statue, ca. 1930
    Oct. 22, 2020

Edward Hagedorn Drawing - African Statue, ca. 1930

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Edward Hagedorn (American, 1902-1982). "African Statue" - graphite drawing, ca. 1930. An impressive drawing of an African nkissi nkondi power figure, created in Edward Hagedorn's signature Expressionist style. The statue is depicted in profile with boldly delineated features and hands on its belly where medicinal elements traditionally are kept in the bilongo, and one can see an accumulation of pegs or nails that were placed there in order to settle conflicts between parties and make peace. This drawing, with its Expressionist style and African subject, reveals Hagedorn's Modernist sensibilities. Size: 18" W x 24" H (45.7 cm x 61 cm) According to the introduction to Hagedorn's retrospective exhibition, "Edward Hagedorn was a true Modernist who created a trove of powerful works on paper--drawings, watercolors, oils, and original graphics that reveal the hand of a master draftsman and the mind of an astute political observer. He rejected the general trend in early 20th century California of local landscapes and coastal views, becoming virtually the single voice of Expressionism. He conveyed the darkness and upheaval that gripped the country in the depression years between the two World Wars, 1925- 1935, more forcefully than any of his contemporaries, influenced by German art of the time, engaging in modernist styles of Expressionism and Surrealism." By age sixteen, Edward Hagedorn was a practicing artist in San Francisco with a studio on the Montgomery Block. During the 1930s, he worked for the Federal Arts Program created under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. Living in the Bay Area for his entire life, he would later keep a studio residence in Berkeley until he passed away. His oeuvre includes oil paintings, etchings, and pencil and charcoal drawings like this example. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has a wonderful collection of Hagedorn's works.
