      Apr. 02, 2023

Frederick Hagan, Examining Snow Creatures 9/44, lithograph

      Est: $600 - $800

In 1985, Canada Post commissioned Hagan to create a set of 16 postage stamps on the theme of Canadian explorers. This lithograph from the Explorer Series features the artist observing and painting animals from Arctic Canada; an Artic Wolf, an ermine, a Snow Goose and a Snowy Owl. Sixteen of Hagan's works were used to form a collection of 38 cent stamps and distributed throughout Canada's post offices. • While studying at the Ontario College of Art (now Ontario College of Art and Design) his teachers were John Alfsen, who became a mentor and father figure, and Frank Carmichael of the Group of Seven. In 1946 Mr. Hagan was hired to teach drawing, painting and printmaking at O.C.A. He was living in Newmarket at the time and commuted to Toronto for the next 37 years. Like most painters, his work was deeply-rooted in his own experiences, and it was never easy to classify. His work never lost its figurative basis, though he had a different way of seeing the world. Mr. Hagan left a great legacy as a teacher at O.C.A. He challenged his students and gave them an immense technical background, along with invitations to great parties at his home. In 1967, Hagan was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal; in 1985, he was commissioned by Canada Post to create the 16 postage stamps, issued 1986-1989; in 1998, he was awarded the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts Medal. His work is presented in prominent public collections including those of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Royal Ontario Museum. Frederick Hagan passed away on September 6, 2003 at the age of 85.
