BIOGRAPHY: Charles Andrew Hafner-sculptor, painter teacher, was born October 28 1888, Omaha NE, died July 29 1960 in NY.He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1925, he was named instructor at the New York Evening Industrial School, and he also served as director of adult art classes of the University of the State of New York in 1933.His work won the bronze medal at the Olympiade Art Exhibition in the Netherlands in 1928. His designs have been shown at exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, at the Architectural League of New York, the Brooklyn Museum and the Albright and Reinhardt Galleries.Mr. Hafner was founder of the American Veterans Society of Artists, Inc. He is well known for his busts of Thomas A. Edison, Daniel Carter Beard, Maude Adams, and Richard Strauss. His Peter Pan was done for a fountain in the lobby of the Paramount Theatre in NY. He also created medals and plaques.In 1918, Charles Hafner served as a ship camouflage artist in the Third Naval District in New York (during which he probably worked with muralist William Andrew Mackay). This is verified by his entry in Who Was Who in American Art. At the end of the war, the following social note appeared in Art News.Charles Haffner, the sculptor who was working in the Camouflage Department for the Government, has returned to New York and has taken a studio in the Holbein, where he is modeling portraits and figure compositions.
