Cement, iron, bronze coating Vienna/Austria, 1949 Oswald Haerdtl (1899-1959) - Austrian architect, designer and lecturer in architecture Pair of large door handles in a simple, modern design Overall dimensions: 24 x 26 x 17.5 cm each Weight: approx. 7.7 kg Provenance: Private collection, Austria Oswald Haerdtl formed a modern architectural language in Vienna that is based on the simple element of the surface The present pair of large door handles was designed by Oswald Haerdtl (1899-1959) in 1949 for the building in the Singerstraße 2/angle Kärtnerstraße 3 on the Stephansplatz in Vienna. The handles are made from concrete which are fitted with a bronze coating. They consist of two angle-shaped surfaces hold together by two iron bars. Since 1848, Haerdtl worked on an urban planning study for the Stephansplatz, collaborating with Karl Schwanzer and Wilhelm Schütte. In his Viennese buildings, Haerdtl formed an avant-garde architectural language that was unusual for the city and characterized by the simple element of the surface. Here, the architect showed a clear influence of the De Stijl movement. The door handles show some wear and oxidation marks consistent with age. The bronze coating shows some major losses, cracks and fillings. Some screws are missing. The overall dimensions of the door handles are 24 x 26 x 17.5 cm each, and the weight of each piece is about 7.7 kg.
