Väinö Hämäläinen (Finnish, 1876-1940) Kevättalvi Espoossa (Early spring in Espoo), 1914 Oil on board 23 x 18-1/4 inches (58.4 x 46.4 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Väinö Hämäläinen / 1914 Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse: Väinö Hämäläinen / Kevättalvi Espoossa / 1914 PROVENANCE: Bukowskis, Helsinki, December 15, 2016, lot 824306; Private collection, Ridgway, Colorado, acquired from the above. Väinö Hämäläinen was a gifted painter, graphic artist, and illustrator whose works are considered among the best examples of the golden age of Finnish visual art. His work has a profoundly romantic quality which celebrates, in a realistic style and with an exquisite sense of design, the landscape of his country. His oil paintings often chronicle the seasons, and include beautiful depictions of snowy hillsides, fir trees weighed down under blankets of new snow, and vistas across half-frozen bodies of water. In addition to his easel paintings and print work, Hämäläinen painted several altarpieces, designed the charity badge for the Tuberculosis Resistance Association in 1910, illustrated numerous Christmas magazines and textbooks, and composed songs. In 1915-16, he built himself a studio villa on Lake Vesijärvi near Lahti. The villa had a lake view of Lake Vesijärvi, a stunning vista which he featured in several of his paintings. HID01801242017
