Karl Hackstock, Bronze Sculpture 'Viennese Winemaker', 1915

    Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Bronze, dark green patinated; black marble Vienna, Austria, 1915 Karl Hackstock (1855-1919) - Austrian sculptor and painter Signed, inscribed and dated on the pedestal 'K. Hackstock / Wien 1915' Total dimensions: 40.5 x 16.5 x 24 cm (height x width x depth) Very good condition Provenance: Viennese private collection Bronze sculptures of this kind enjoy great popularity amongst collectors because of their naturalistic execution The bronze sculpture was created by the Austrian sculptor Karl Hackstock 1915 in Vienna. The sculpture is crafted of dark green patinated bronze and stands on a black naturalistic marble pedestal. The figure depicts a typical subject matter of the work force of the beginning of the 20th century. Hackstock cast here a farmworker, who is walking along a field, carrying a wooden basket and a shovel over the shoulders and lunch bag in his hand. He is wearing laborer's clothing and a hat. The face is rendered especially skillfully - the facial expression are finely modelled and show a concentrated working man. Hackstock's farmworker is a winemaker from the hills of Vienna. It was important for the sculptor to show the burdensome poverty and physical effort of the labor world of his time. The bronze is in very good condition with slight traces of age and wear. It is signed, inscribed and dated on the pedestal 'K. Hackstock / Wien 1915'. The total dimensions, including the marble pedestal, are 40.5 x 16.5 x 24 cm (height x width x depth). Karl Hackstock (1855-1919) Karl Hackstock was a pupil of Karl Kundmann at the Viennese Academy, which has honored him with a number of prizes. For a period of 15 years, he engaged in making the well-known Tanagra figures and later he was also a portrait painter. Amongst others he modelled the portrait busts of Robert Hamerling and Peter Rosegger. The German library in Leipzig possesses Hackstock's marble bust of Franz Grillparzer. He created a series of monuments in Austrian towns. For a couple of years, Hackstock was the president of the Albrecht Dürer Association and also received their golden medal.
