The ruins consist of a large underground vault, whose archways, overgrown with vegetation, Hackert draws here in great detail and presents to the viewer in a beautiful play of light and shadow.

              Nov. 16, 2024

Jacob Philipp Hackert, In the ruins of the Colosseum

              Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Signed lower left: Ph: Hackert f. / inscribed top right: dans le colise à Rome 1775 Hackert's study of the Colosseum began in the year of his arrival in Italy and continued until 1779, during which time he produced several drawings and paintings depicting this ancient building in its original state. Our sheet should be seen in conjunction with a drawing from the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne (inv. no. 1936/136), which is only slightly smaller, also bears the French inscription, albeit without the year, and shows a similar section of the Colosseum (Nordhoff op. cit. no. 1202). There is also a chronological and motivic connection to the painting ‘Ruinen in Rom’ from the Kiel Kunsthalle, dated 1775 (Nordhoff op. cit. no. 86). A small connecting detail also stands out: In the painting, the figure of a wanderer can already be recognised in the distance, who is sitting on a piece of rubble and leaning on his stick, looking at the imposing remains of the Roman past.

              Nov. 16, 2024

Jacob Philipp Hackert, Landscape with a farmstead and a carriage crossing a piece of water

              Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed and dated lower left: Ph Hackert 1767 In August 1765, Jakob Philipp Hacker and Anton Balthasar Dunker arrived in Paris, where they quickly made contact with the artists from the studio of the engraver Georg Wille. Wille was probably the key figure for Hackert during his time in France. Shortly after his arrival in France, he travelled to Normandy with Wille, followed by a walk along the Seine and tours in Picardy. He always had his sketchbook with him; back in Paris, he created his paintings. Hackert's paintings from this period must be seen in the context of landscape painting from the circle of artists around Georg Wille. These painters orientated themselves more towards Dutch painting, in which they felt a greater closeness to nature. Wille and his pupils were particularly fond of the area around Paris, the ruins of castles and churches in Normandy, ruined fortresses and picturesque barns. They saw country life as an idealised alternative to life in the city. In contrast to his later landscapes in Italy, which depict more or less real areas, Hackert's French paintings are still idealised landscapes composed of various motifs.

            • Jacob Philipp Hackert, Olive Tree in a Mountainous Landscape with Waterfall
              Nov. 16, 2024

Jacob Philipp Hackert, Olive Tree in a Mountainous Landscape with Waterfall

              Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Signed verso upper right: Phi. Hackert fec. and verso upper left number 4 This unusual painting by Jacob Philipp Hackert is one of his late works. In the last years before his death in 1807, the painter not only drew but also painted in oil, free from the constraints of the market and courtly patrons in nature, i.e. ‘plein-air’. Our picture belongs to a group of later tree pictures painted outdoors, including a comparable painting dated 1805 in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (GM 1977) and another in Valence in the south of France (Musée dé Valence). Commenting on the present painting, Nordhoff writes: ‘This olive tree in a mountainous landscape closes a circle that links the artist's early work with his later work. Hackert's Roman career began with a view of the waterfalls of Tivoli executed entirely in the open air (Rome, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, inv. no. 1177). This work was so spectacular for its time that Goethe wrote about it in detail in his biography’ (op. cit. p. 68).

He arrived in Rome in December of the same year. Here Hackert quickly became the most famous landscape painter not only in the Eternal City, but in the whole of Europe. Immediately after his arrival, Hackert began to explore the surrounding landscape. In Rome, he had made the acquaintance of the Swedish sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814) and the French painter Antoine François Callet (1741-1823), with whom he undertook a hike in the Alban Hills south-east of Rome in the spring of 1769. During this first hike, Hackert, who was used to the northern vegetation, must have been fascinated not least by the southern tree species, which were unknown to him at the time. In fact, the artist had already begun to draw trees from nature in Berlin; in Italy, the "tree portrait" became his speciality. Botanical studies were indispensable for such a detailed investigation of trees, which Hackert pursued with almost scientific fervour. One of the trees that attracted Hackert's attention as early as 1769 was the maritime pine, currently recognised as the Italian national tree. This tree species, native to the northern Mediterranean region, grows up to 30 metres high and is 250 years old. Pine trees characterise the Roman cityscape, but they can be found throughout Lazio. In the drawing now on offer (lot 1044), we see two tall trees whose crowns seem to merge into one above the slender trunks. Below them, two countrywomen are resting with a bundle of wood, which on the one hand can be interpreted as typical representatives of the local population and on the other hand provide a scale. The drawing was executed in red chalk. This reminds us that Hackert was still experimenting with various drawing techniques in the early Roman years. In later years, the artist would limit himself to pencil or pen, with which the contours of the landscape elements could be reproduced precisely, and then later rework them with a sepia brush. The warm red tones, on the other hand, allowed the artist to create a painterly rendition of the southern atmosphere, which is also characterised by the pine trees. In our drawing, the trees rise up into a cloudless sky against which the branches elaborate their filigree pattern; dark shadows lie beneath the sunlit bundles of needles, lending the treetops a spatial dimension. Under Hackert's pencil, the pines themselves seem to transform into a work of art - and the painter shows you nothing but the reality of the area near Albano. The drawing thus proves to be a high-quality work of art in its own right. At the same time, however, it is a valuable addition to the group of "tree portraits" executed in the Alban Hills in the 1770s, in which Hackert took an inventory, as it were, of the trees in the area. The wanderers or country folk who appear repeatedly in the sheets emphasise the principle of movement in the pictorial space and remind us that each drawing is only part of a larger whole. And so Hackert takes the viewer on a journey that leads into the depths to the two pine trees, which are presented in all their beauty. The path will lead the artist further, towards new views and new trees, which can be captured in ever new drawings. This transfer of landscape into art was Hackert's final goal. Notation: Signed and dated lower left: "Filippo / Hackert / 1801". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Claudia Nordhoff wrote to us about this work in March 2024: "Jakob Philipp Hackert had also devoted himself to small-format animal portraiture at all times, but it was only after his escape from French-occupied Naples in 1799 and his final settlement in Florence in 1800 that he began to occupy himself with it in greater detail. The decisive factor was his friendship with the Englishwoman Jane Woodburn, wife of Colonel David Woodburn (1745-1804). The couple had acquired a country estate in the small town of Settignano near Florence and allowed Hackert to use the property during her absence. On 28 September 1802, the painter wrote to his friend Count Bogislaus Dönhoff zu Dönhoffstädt (1754-1809) in Berlin on 28 September 1802: "Nahe hier bey der Stadt [Florenz] 4 Milien bey Settimiano hat eine Englische Freundin Mdme Woodburn zwey poteri [gemeint ist ein Landhaus mit zwei Wirtschaftsgebäuden], die Sie mir 17 Monath während ihrer Abwesenheit in England gelaßen hat, um ihr Landhauß zu genißen, da Mahle ich Ziegen, und Esel, Ochsen nach der Natur aber so daß es fertige Bilder werden. Also rocks and foregrounds."] (quoted by Claudia Nordhoff, Jakob Philipp Hackert, Briefe (1761-1806). Göttingen 2012, p. 187). From 1804, Hackert executed his animal portraits on his own estate in Careggi, which he acquired at this time. The small-format pictures share goats, sheep, donkeys and cows in front of a small section of landscape; they are always executed lovingly and with great care. The present portrait of a goat was painted in the first year of Hackert's involvement with animals on Mrs Woodburn's estate and (together with two other goat pictures from 1801) marks the beginning of the series. The importance that the animal pictures had for Hackert can also be seen from the fact that he sent five of them to the Academy exhibition in Berlin in 1806 (see Nordhoff 2012, p. 614)." This road was built in the second century BC and connected Rome with Ariminum on the Adriatic coast, today's Rimini. Emperor Vespasian later had a tunnel built here to make it easier to pass through the narrowest part of the gorge. The name comes from the Latin "forulum", which means small hole.

Stay, stay...", and yet it again took too long to put the dog in the picture! What dog owners know from today's attempts to photograph their four-legged friend spontaneously but as favourably as possible with a mobile phone, Jacob Philipp Hackert must have experienced in a very similar way - in his medium of painting, of course. In her expertise on this painting, Claudia Nordhoff notes brushstrokes in many details, "which reveal that the dog portrait was created in the countryside and relatively quickly - perhaps with the intention of completing it before the dog moved." The quality that Hackert had achieved in this way convinced him so much that he signed and dated the painting and labelled it with the reference to Florence as the place of origin. It was probably not his own, but the dog of Charles Nassau, 3rd Earl Cowper, at whose Villa Palmieri in Fiesole near Florence Hackert was a guest.

Signed and dated lower right: Castel d'Aci au pied dell'Etna / Ph. Hackert f. 1781 Framed under glass Certificate Dr Claudia Nordhoff, Rome, 22.5.1995. The picture shows a view of the small village of Aci Castello at the foot of Mount Etna in Sicily. Hackert had travelled to Sicily in 1777 together with two English fellow travellers, Charles Gore and Richard Payne Knight. At the time, Sicily was not yet a major travel destination; the so-called "Grand Tour" of travellers to Italy ended in Naples and the coast of Amalfi. After the "discovery" of Sicily by Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the Hessian baron Johann Hermann von Riedesel also travelled to the island in 1767 and subsequently published a small travel guide. This process of cultural exploration of Sicily also included Hackert's journey of 1777, the purpose of which was to publish an illustrated travel guide: Hackert and Charles Gore produced drawings, while Richard Payne Knight kept a travel diary. The project failed in the end, probably mainly because the first volume of the Abbé de Saint-Non's great work "Voyage pittoresque ou Description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile" was published in 1781. This was the first time that the principle of juxtaposing text and image, which Richard Payne Knight had envisaged, was realised. 24 dated and five undated drawings from Hackert's journey to Sicily have survived (Nordhoff / Reimer , nos. 709 - 732, 1009, 1010, 1207-1209). Back in Rome, he produced various paintings in the following years and an undated series of etchings with twelve views, probably made in 1786, entitled "Vues de la Sicile" (quoted from the certifcate by C. Nordhoff 1996).

Signed and dated lower left: J. Ph. Hackert f. 1772 Jacob Philipp Hackert was in his fourth year in Italy and had recently been on his way to Europe-wide fame when he painted "Fishermen with Boat on a Beach" in 1772. His landscape and coastal views were particularly successful: gouaches painted in France in 1768 found prominent buyers in François Boucher, among others, and three years later he produced a whole cycle of sea battles, for which Tsarina Catherine II reserved a separate room in Peterhof Palace. Hackert's views of the coast and boats in Italy, on the other hand, radiate peaceful tranquillity. On the coasts beyond the Grand Tour end point of Naples, which had only just been discovered by travellers, Hackert found respite after recovering from illness. In his paintings from this period, the necessary balanced mood can be found. After work, the fishermen are back with full baskets, looking forward to the end of the day.

(Prenzlau 1737–1807 San Pietro di Careggio) A wooded mountainous landscape with the Copper-Mill in Vietri signed, inscribed and dated lower right: a Vietri pre[s]. de Salern[o]/ Hackert f. 1772, oil on canvas, 63.5 x 87.2 cm, framed Provenance: sale, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 14 May 2002, lot 111; where acquired by the present owner Claudia Nordhoff confirmed the attribution after examination of the present painting in the original in 2002 (written communication in copy, dated 7 July 2002). The present painting depicts a collection of buildings situated at the foot of a mountain. At the right end of the outbuildings the mill wheel is set in motion by a stream of water coming from the higher area and filling the pond. A small group of figures have gathered in front of the doorstep of the mill, whilst a cattle herder and his dog are passing by. The landscape is gently lit, typical for Jakob Philipp Hackert and his contemporaries. After arriving in Rome in 1768, Hackert undertook a trip to Naples in 1770. According to Goethe, whom the artist befriended, Hackert fell ill and was advised to seek recovery in the nearby coastal villages of Vietri and Lacava. In their surroundings the 'Valle del Moline', the Valley of the Mills, was a popular destination and it is there that the present composition finds its origin. Hackert’s body of work often contains multiple versions of pictorial motifs that were particularly popular with his clientele. The area of Lacava and Vietri offers a unique variety of plants, and the motif depicted by Hackert was an opportunity to present the diversity of this southern Italian landscape and its vegetation. According to Nordhoff this may have contributed to the composition’s success. As the described studio practice by Nordhoff suggests, the present painting is part of a group of works of similar composition. Aside from minor differences, the present work relates to a watercolour, which is signed and dated 1770 and bears an inscription that identifies the building as the copper mill in Vietri. The watercolour is conserved in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (inv. no. C 1963-1602). A year later, the artist composed a drawing in brown colour tones, depicting the copper mill from a closer point of view and altered the figures slightly. The drawing is dated to 1771 and privately owned (see C. Nordhoff, H. Reimer, Jakob Philipp Hackert, 1737–1807. Verzeichnis seiner Werke, Berlin, 1994, p. 267, 268, no. 647, illustrated p. 252). The watercolour and the drawing are a prelude to the present painting and to a similar work in oils on canvas which is dated 1773 and in a private collection (see C. Nordhoff, H. Reimer, ibid., 1994, p. 30, no. 76). Comparing the watercolour and the drawing with the two paintings it is noticeable how Hackert chose to set the mill in an extensive landscape in both canvasses. Apart from minor alterations, the most striking difference between the 1773 painting and the present work is the addition of a group of women doing laundry on the banks of the pond in the 1773 painting. Trained by his father Philipp Hackert, the artist continued his studies at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. As a young artist Hackert drew inspiration from the 17th century Dutch landscape painters and the works of Claude Lorrain. Working in different areas and cities in Germany and Sweden, the artist departed for Italy in 1768, where he settled in Rome and joined the international circle of artists under the direction of Anton Raphael Mengs and Johann Joachim Winckelmann. Later Hackert worked for King Ferdinand IV of Naples and befriended Goethe, who edited and published Hackert’s memoirs posthumously.

Literature: Nordhoff, Claudia and Hans Reimer: Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807. Verzeichnis seiner Werke. Volume II, p. 362f., no. 887. Provenance: Bergische company collection. Previously possibly Dom Galerie Ed. Arthur Schmidt Cologne. Auction catalogue no. L, Dessin anciens et modernes, Gutekunst & Klipstein, Bern, 21-22 June 1949, no. 618. JAKOB PHILIPP HACKERT 1737 Prenzlau - 1807 San Piero di Careggio (Florenz) AUF DEM MONTE VERGINE Feder und Pinsel und braune Tusche, teilweise leicht laviert auf beigem Papier. 550 x 683 mm (sichtbares Maß), 750 x 870 mm (Rahme. Signiert, datiert und bezeichnet halblinks unten: "a Monte Vergine Filippo Hackert f. 1795". Verso: Verso: bezeichnet auf altem Papieretikett der Dom Galerie Ed. Arthur Schmidt Köln: "Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807) Original-Sepia-Aquarell Nr. 2131".
