SHAFURDIN HABIB : Movement II, 2004

            Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Movement II by Shafurdin Habib is an evocative watercolor painting that showcases the artist’s mastery in capturing fluidity and energy in nature. Known for his vibrant depictions of the Malaysian landscape, Shafurdin often uses watercolor to portray movement, light, and atmosphere with remarkable precision. Movement II stands out as a testament to this style, blending dynamic strokes and vivid hues to reflect the beauty of motion in a natural setting. In this piece, Shafurdin uses bold and sweeping brushstrokes to create a sense of constant motion, whether it’s the rustling of leaves, the sway of trees, or the ripple of water. The colors—ranging from lush greens and deep blues to warm earth tones—mimic the natural environment while providing an abstract yet familiar feel. The use of light within the painting adds an ethereal quality, giving the landscape a fleeting, dreamlike essence.

            SHAFURDIN HABIB: Pulang II, 2011

            Est: RM1,100 - RM2,500

Sharfudin Habib, a self-taught artist who pursued painting all through the 1980s was born in Kampung Basong, Perak. His innate passion for art as a schoolboy translated to pencil drawings on the pages of his school exercise books. What was a humble hobby soon becoming a profound hunger which led him to make a giant leap from the comforts of his kampung to Kuala Lumpur. SharfudinÕs style of work highlights the simple, Malaysian rural life as seen in ÔPulang IIÕ. The fuel of his paintings are derived from the whole experience of being in the county, from the fisherman toiling at sea to the women pounding spices on their verandas and the villagers returning home from their antics.

            SHAFURDIN HABIB: Silat, 1990

            Est: RM8,000 - RM12,000

The lovely Malaysian countryside has a lot to offer and has certainly proven to be a muse for Shafurdin Habib, as he captures the beauty of the village life along with the people at its best, raw and untouched. Utilising his virtuosity with acrylic on canvas, he paints very skilfully a group of manly figures whom are all most likely doing the silat, as titled, a martial arts tradition of the Malays showing an accurate depiction of life in the countryside. Shafurdin Habib was born in Kampung Basong, Perak, in 1961. A hobby he had as a boy, which was drawing in all his exercise book, turned into something big as he developed a real passion for art. Many of his influences are derived from Khalil Ibrahim, whom he befriended after he moved to Kuala Lumpur to pursue art.

In fact, KhalilÕs influence is discerned in many of ShafurdinÕs works, as illustrated in the ÔStudy of Movement I, II,III, 2004Õ. Contrasting to KhalilÕs infamous works, ShafurdinÕs lines in the movements are not as evident and the colours used by him are darker and more mysterious.
