signed right in the main subject: N. Gyzis / Munchen In 1875, Gyzis painted one of his most iconic works, The vow. It is a moral scene portraying the journey of a young girl until the remote chapel, supported by her mother, in order to fulfil her vow. The chain with the heart-shaped amulet that she is holding in her hands implies that the vow has to do with her lost fiance. The sorrow of the young woman is reflected in the dim colours of the sky and the barren dark setting, in which she walks barefoot. Her face, however, is shining, from a light which comes from an unknown source, which produces an exceptionally intense moment. She is undoubtedly the protagonist of the love drama. At this sad moment it seems that the only help she gets is from religion and her elderly mother who helps her reach the chapel. The painter produced three variations of the same subject (1874, 1875, 1886), a proof of his love for highly dramatic everyday moments and, in particular, for people who are heartbroken. With The vow, Gyzis breaks the limits of mere moral scenes and of the German chromatic palette and uses a highly personal idiom that encompasses the link between Greek emotion and Faith. The painting was completed after a short trip he took to Greece and in December 1875 it was acquired by the English art dealer Wallis before its purchase by a private collector in Athens.

Gutachten: Dr. Konstantinos Didaskalou, 7.6.2016 (in Kopie vorhanden). Provenienz: Europäischer Besitz. Mit verträumtem Blick dreht das junge Mädchen seinen Kopf zur linken Seite. Nikolaus Gysis porträtiert das Kind mit pastosem Farbauftrag vor dunklem Hintergrund. Mit skizzenhaften Pinselstrichen fängt er den Charakter des Mädchens ein und verleiht dem Bildnis Ausdruckskraft. Im Werk des Künstlers spielen Kinderporträts, unter denen sich auch zahlreiche Darstellungen seiner eigenen Kinder befinden, eine grosse Rolle. Wie viele griechische Künstler des 19. Jahrhunderts zieht es auch Nikolaus Gysis nach München. In der bayerischen Hauptstadt entwickelt sich seiner Zeit im Umkreis der Akademie der Bildenden Künste die Stilrichtung der Münchner Schule. Wichtiger Vertreter dieser Strömung ist der deutsche Maler Carl von Piloty (1826–1886), der Gysis 1868 in sein Meisteratelier aufnimmt und dessen Lehre prägend für den Stil des griechischen Künstlers wird.
