      Allan Gwynne-Jones, R.A. (1892-1982) O'Brien's West End Amusement Park, Tottenham Court Road, 1925 signed and inscribed '"Study of Fair" held in mid thirties/on white ground behind Meux/Brewery at the corner of Tottenham/Court road & New Oxford St./Done at night by candlelight in/a disused house. oil on canvas/painted entirely out of doors/The "painting" was purhcased by/Sir Gerald Kelly & was in his/possesion till his death and was/lent by Lady Kelly for the Exhibition/held at Agnews in March 1972 (to mark my 80th birthday) This study in oils was pretty/closely ... in the final/picture - even though a great/many other studies were made/for it. A number of these/studies chiefly as gouaches are in the possession of M. Brouisley Ford./painted by/Allan Gwynne - Jones D.S.A. RA I think the date of the study was/mid twenties, not thirties, while/I was professor of painting at the Royal Academy of Art' (on a label attached to the backboard) oil on canvas 9 x 11¾ in. (22.9 x 29.8 cm.)

      § Allan Gwynne-Jones, CBE, DSO, RA (British, 1892-1982) Study of a Dandelion oil on board h:43 w: 38 cm Provenance: Thos. Agnew and Sons Ltd. Private collection, Cambridge. Exhibited: Royal Academy, Summer Exhibition, 1976. Other Notes: Allan Gwynne-Jones began a course at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1914, but three months later was commissioned into the Cheshire Regiment. He was wounded and awarded the Distinguished Service Order at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Gwynne-Jones returned to the Slade after demobilisation in 1919, and in 1923 became Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art. He remained at the Royal College for the remainder of his career, and gained renown for his own painting, most notably portraits and paintings of flowers. Gwynne-Jones became a Royal Academician in 1956, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1980. The present painting was painted in the spring of 1974 at Eastleach Touville, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
