        Mar. 20, 2024

Woody Gwyn "Tourists II" Oil Painting 1991-92

        Est: $15,000 - $30,000

Woody Gwyn (American, b. 1944). Oil on canvas painting titled "Tourists II" depicting a scenic vista of the American southwest, 1991-92. Two tourists stand at the edge of an overlook, taking in the dramatic view. Signed along the lower right. Provenance: Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, New York; Distinguished Corporate Collection, Minnesota. Lot Essay: Gwyn found early inspiration in New Mexico when he moved there in 1974. The sense of space and scale informed his vast landscapes. It is these landscapes that would lead to his recognition as one of America's foremost contemporary landscape painters. The purity of color in his works as well as radiant lighting, unconventional compositions, and inclusion of minute details has led him to be dubbed a "painter of clarity itself." His works usually start as plein-air sketches and watercolors and record the immediate details. From there, he moves to his studio where he begins to capture "the truth of the land" with color on canvas, panel, or paper. While his works capture the reality of his subjects, they are also imbued with a sense of hidden extraordinary. He finds the inherent beauty of the landscape in every work. Gwyn has been highly exhibited throughout the United States and his works are held in the collections of esteemed institutions including The Cleveland Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, the Denver Art Museum, and many more.

Woody Gwyn (American/Texas, b. 1944), "Llegamos con Tres Heridas", oil on board mounted to panel, signed upper center, "Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, NM" label with artist and title on reverse of mount, 10 3/16 in. x 13 1/2 in., framed. Provenance: Collection of Wendy and the late George (1944-2013) Rodrigue. Note: New Mexico-based artist Woody Gwyn is well-known for his meditative landscapes and seascapes which reflect the artist’s exceptional ability to balance realism with abstraction. By often focusing on a horizontal format, Gwyn encourages viewers look at the world around them in new ways. As Lucy R. Lippard writes: “By compressing a landscape into a thin band, he concentrates its essence into a visual field we can comprehend, at the same time that it is about to escape us.” In “Llegamos con Tres Heridas (We Arrived with Three Wounds)” offered here, the artist’s emblematic landscape diverges into a composition featuring a figure and skull that remains evocative of earth and sky. The painting is from Gwyn’s series that combines imagery of figures, human and animal bones and aphorisms. The series can be beautifully described by a quote from Carlos Castaneda (included as the caption on one of the works): “The aim is to balance the terror of being alive with the wonder of being alive.” Much like Gwyn’s landscapes, this work is charged with the physical and metaphysical reflections that permeate the artist’s canvases. George and Wendy Rodrigue developed a friendship with Gwyn during their regular travels through New Mexico and selected the two works on offer here for their personal collection. Woody Gwyn, (American/New Mexico, b. 1944), "Earth, Water, Sky", acrylic on canvas, a triptych, overall 32" x 96"

        Est: $20,000 - $40,000

Woody Gwyn (American/New Mexico, b. 1944) "Earth, Water, Sky" acrylic on canvas, a triptych signed lower left on "Earth" panel, verso with "Meredith Long & Company, Houston, Texas" label. Unframed. overall 32" x 96" Provenance: Meredith Long & Company, Houston, Texas; Estate of Nancy R. Morrison, Houston, Texas. Notes: A foremost contemporary landscape painter, Woody Gwyn's precisely composed paintings can appear simultaneously nearly photographic in nature when viewed from a distance, yet abstract as one focuses on various planes of color. This is apparent in the "Earth, Water and Sky" triptych offered here where elements are distilled into uncomplicated representations without compromising attention to details. This is intentionally reminiscent of certain 17th-century Dutch artists. "Look at [Johannes] Vermeer," said the artist in a 2021 interview for an exhibit at LewAllen Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico. "You can turn a Vermeer upside down and it's still exciting looking, just the way he broke up the spaces in an abstract sort of way. That's what makes him better than, say, [Pieter] de Hooch, who painted just as well as Vermeer but didn't have that abstract flash. It's very crucial that a thing work on the abstract level, whether it's representational or not." Gwyn's landscapes, such as the "Abiquiu II", another work offered in this auction (Lot 130), mirror the ways he encounters the topographies as he drives along winding mountain roads in New Mexico, or gazes out past guardrails along the California coast. Where some would edit out the man-made elements such as guardrails and tarmac - or even choose a different angle or perspective - he faithfully incorporates them into his works. As the artist himself has stated, "There's a potential for beauty in places where we don't necessarily expect it."

      • Signed & Framed Woody Gwyn Monotype - New Mexico
        Oct. 07, 2021

Signed & Framed Woody Gwyn Monotype - New Mexico

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Woody Gwyn (American, b. 1944). Untitled monotype (a single print from an oil painting). Pencil signed below the image at lower center. A breathtaking monotype of a New Mexican view by Woody Gwyn, one of America's finest landscape painters, this piece epitomizes Gwyn's talent for employing striking extremes in dimension and theme in order to capture the infinite quality of picturesque New Mexico. In this monotype, Gwynn's mountain view is remarkably realistic and simultaneously conjures a sense of infinity. Gwyn lures the viewer in via the work's intriguing scale and dramatically generous border, a truly gripping technique that is almost theatrical in its effect. An outstanding piece, set in a custom frame and pencil signed below the center of the composition. Size of image: 4.75" L x 28.625" W (12.1 cm x 72.7 cm) Size of sheet: 29.5" L x 41.125" W (74.9 cm x 104.5 cm) Size of frame: 32.2" L x 43.875" W (81.8 cm x 111.4 cm) New Mexico has served as a profound influence on Woody Gwynn, and he has waxed poetic about its landscape, "There's just such an incredible scale about it … We know that the mountains are finite, but they put us in the mind of infinity you see. They put us in mind of something bigger than themselves, and New Mexico is a place that does that. Its big, but it puts you in mind of realities that are even bigger. That feeling of infinity is a feeling of beauty, a feeling of possibility, and all the positive things that we all want and need in our lives." Woody Gwyn, American, b. 1944, tempera on panel

        Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Woody Gwyn, American, b. 1944. New Mexico, Texas. Super real panoramic landscape. “Capitan” is signed lower left. It is titled, dated, and signed on the painted stretcher verso as well. Gwyn was raised in Texas and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work was exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum, le Centre Nationale des Arts Plastiques, the MFA Houston, and the MFA Santa Fe. He moved to Galisteo, New Mexico where he painted the surrounding southwest landscape, which included the Canyon de Chelly. His landscape paintings are intended to remind one of these lands as they stand in contemporary times. Changes to the western landscape are referenced through the inclusion of interstate highways. The characteristic style of Gwyn includes dramatic viewing angles, startling color, aggressive cropping, and the contrast between the natural and manmade. Capitan is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada Mountains located in California. Here Gwyn incorporated just enough grasses along the road to contrast with the man made. The point of view shows the floor of the mountain, making it appear slightly aerial. This device references aerial photography and satellite surveillance that neutralizes perceived distance to the earth and it is utilized to re-humanize our sense of space. The intent behind Gwyn’s body of art is to present the truths and beauty in the way that things currently are.
