        Jaime de Guzman (1942 - 2023) - Seascape

        Est: ₱220,000 - ₱286,000

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Seascape signed (lower right) oil on canvas 30" x 40" (76 cm x 102 cm) PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist The oeuvres of Thirteen Artists Award recipient Jaime de Guzman have shifted and transformed throughout the years but despite the atmospheric changes, they have cemented themselves (and their creator) into Philippine art history, with de Guzman becoming perhaps one of the most important figures in the 1960s Philippine art scene. His earlier works were angrier and more morose, covered in shades of red and black but his later works mellowed down to a softer, lighter oeuvre. The lot in hand, Seascape, takes after this more pleasant later period. De Guzman’s odyssey in the Philippines (he along with his wife Anne first moved to Laguna then to Sagada) helped imbibe his work with the idyllic atmosphere of the rural and the provincial. Seascape, in particular, echoes the warm beaches that surround the coasts of Laguna. Depicting a warm afternoon, boats rest on the beach as the sunlight beats down on the sea, turning the blue waters into an even more vibrant shade. In the distance, a mountain could be seen, verdant green under the shining sun. The later works of De Guzman fully embody the folk serenity and the domesticity of provincial life. It breathes fresh air into his works, rekindling nature that would manifest in the changes in his expressionistic style. Seascape portrays the quietude found within the sea, emphasizing the beauty one could find if they take the time to converse with nature and appreciate the solitude brought by it. (Hannah Valiente)

Jaime de Guzman (1942 - 2023) - Through The Window

        Est: ₱140,000 - ₱182,000

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Through The Window dated 1970 (verso) oil on canvas 24" x 20" (61 cm x 51 cm) PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist Jaime de Guzman’s Through The Window was created at a momentous period of the artist’s career. Already a celebrated painter from the late 1960s to 1970s, his artistry was once again celebrated when he was included in the first batch of the Thirteen Artists Award in 1970, handpicked by no less than eminent artist Roberto Chabet himself. Through The Window was created in the same year he received the prestigious award. With his signature expressionist brush strokes – all exaggerated and sweeping with emotions – de Guzman takes the perspective of a mother, or perhaps a grandmother, staring out through a window to watch over her child. He utilizes a deep color scheme, portraying the antiquity of the wooden windowsill and the age of the tree the child leans against through the mature colors. De Guzman’s earlier works are, in shades of red and black, steeped in angst, somber and surrealist in their anger. As he traveled around the world and in the Philippines, his oeuvre mellowed down as he rekindled with a softer and kinder nature. Through The Window merges De Guzman’s darker palette with a softer subject, creating a perfect middle ground between his vastly different works to portray both the unapologetically bold and the mellifluous joy that makes itself home in his body of works. Jaime de Guzman (1942 - 2023) - Tree Root

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Tree Root signed and dated 1990 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 33" (91 cm x 84 cm) PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist Jaime de Guzman and the Hallowed Mount Banahaw The Filipino Artist as a Mystic When Jaime de Guzman started his career in the late 1960s, he instantly rose to fame with his dark and angsty expressionist-cum-surrealist paintings, exploring social, political, historical, psychological, and even mythological aspects. His 1970 murals—Gomburza and the three-part Metamorphosis (all now in the Cultural Center of the Philippines collection)—are the consummate examples of de Guzman’s trademark style at the beginning of his artistic career. De Guzman’s expressionist style stemmed from the sociopolitical and socio-economic turbulence brought by the thenimpending dictatorship. However, during his 1970-71 study grant, sponsored by the National Historical Commission, to learn mural techniques in Mexico, de Guzman met American ceramic artist Anne Polkinghorn, with whom he would have a romantic relationship. Spurred by this love encounter, de Guzman returned to the Philippines in 1971, bringing Anne with him. The two traveled to Sagada and Bontoc and would eventually settle in the rustic environs of Liliw, Laguna, de Guzman’s hometown. De Guzman and Polkinghorn were an itinerant couple, moving from place to place, even crossing overseas: 1974 in California; 1977 in Candelaria, Quezon; the 1980s in Sagada, Mountain Province; and back to Candelaria by 1993. In between those years, de Guzman traveled back to Manila for exhibitions and sojourned to Dumaguete from 1992 to 1993, sailing to Apo Island and Siquijor, where he created numerous works. Overall, romance amid the backdrop of the idyllic would transform de Guzman’s disposition and his art. The pervading darkness would be enveloped by a penetrating mysticism. De Guzman had gradually begun to find peace from and within the tranquility of his environs, which would be captured in his canvas. This piece from 1990, which de Guzman created during his mellower years, depicts a ubiquitous scene on the mystical Mount Banahaw, which straddles both de Guzman’s hometowns of Liliw and Candelaria. A candle burning brightly inside a makeshift altar formed through a hollowed tree trunk evokes a sacred presence, as stressed by an image of the “Eye of Divine Providence,” seemingly watching over and guiding pilgrims in their hallowed excursions into the mountain. Altars of this kind, known as “pwestos” or natural shrines (rocks, springs, caves, and peaks) that profoundly manifest God’s power, are the objects upon which the “pamumuwesto” (traditional prayer practice of pilgrims to Mount Banahaw) are acted on. A highly symbolic work, de Guzman’s painting is palpable proof of an artist wedding the personal with the sacred, where the idyll of nature offers a much grander space for personal introspection and reconnection with one’s spirituality. Jaime de Guzman was among the first artists to be honored in the inaugural edition of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award held in 1970. (Adrian Maranan)

De Guzman’s brisk brush strokes and deep color palettes denote a sense of urgency, an intimacy to the scene that is characteristic of his oeuvre. “[De Guzman’s] pictures depend on his phenomenological pursuit of his brushstrokes. He makes abstract dabs and dashes all over the board, sees them and conforms them to the shapes and objects stacked in his memory,” writes art critic Ray Albano. Jaime de Guzman (b. 1942) - Bull

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

PROPERTY FROM THE DR. EDILBERTO B. BRAVO COLLECTION Bull signed and dated 1991 (lower right) oil on canvas 30” x 40” (76 cm x 102 cm) WRITE UPThirteen Artists Award recipient Jaime de Guzman is renowned for his mural-like paintings, the personal mythologies embedded in his works often larger than life and seeping into the reality beyond the artist’s already vast canvas. When de Guzman moved in with his wife American ceramist Anne Polkinghorn in his hometown of Laguna, he had imbibed the mystical atmosphere of rural and provincial life into his works along with the folk serenity of domestic life. This new era was a breath of fresh air and a rekindling of spiritual connection with nature that would become manifest in de Guzman’s change in expressionistic style, here captured in the artist’s own musings in poetry: The creative person does not stop When there are no walls to unwall. There is always something to do. Wedge the day, invent a little. It is good for the mind To feel the earth, to water it, to form it And be formed. Essential to de Guzman’s domestic life is his venture into ceramic art with his wife Anne who had introduced him to pottery even back during his stay in Mexico for an artistic grant. It was a venture that translated as well into a more intimate relationship with the earth of his homeland, bestowing upon him a new artistic vision. It was one that allowed him to weave the personal with the sacred space at the foot of Mount Banahaw where the artist and his family lived for some time. In this piece, fresh shades of greenery and deep, rich hues of the earth come together to form a vibrant landscape. Invigorated with new life and reborn by the artist’s hand, the rural image itself is life-giving, rekindling in the viewer a connection with the humble spirit of the agricultural land. (Pie Tiausas)

        Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

PROPERTY FROM THE DR. EDILBERTO B. BRAVO COLLECTION Sagada signed and dated 1991 (lower right) oil on canvas 36” x 42” (91 cm x 107 cm) WRITE UP From the 1960s to the 1970s, the oeuvres of Jaime de Guzman would prominently feature social realist works in a distinct expressionist style that bridged towards a dark surrealism. It was this artistic direction that would lead the National Historical Commission in 1971 to send him to Mexico on a grant to further his practice. In Mexico, he met his wife American ceramist Anne Polkinghorn whom he had raised a family with in his hometown of Laguna. De Guzman’s new family life would change the trajectory of his works whilst still retaining an expressionist style clearly rooted in the artist’s personal mythologies. As he drew from his newfound home life at the Banahaw foothills aside from his sojourns with his family to Sagada in Mt. Province at that time, de Guzman’s formerly stygian expressionism would metamorphose into mystically-tinged scenes of nature and the provincial called ‘light-scapes.’ In this 1991 work, the artist renders nature with a muralistic sense, embedding a hidden yet grand narrative of creation in the freshly-lit verdance of foliage and rough textures of boulders. The undertones of blue and turquoise here evoke a mystical sense of light while the shadowy grays and purples in the foreground frame the overall composition secretively. It is as if looking at a gradual revelation of creation— a metamorphosis from dark to light. (Pie Tiausas)

Jaime de Guzman (b. 1942) Mount Banahaw signed and dated 1984 (lower right) oil on canvas 41 1/2" x 41" (105 cm x 104 cm) EXHIBITED Pinaglabanan Galleries, Four One-Man Exhibitions (Pinaglabanan Gallery Inaugural Show), San Juan, November 9 - December 2, 1984 In the 1980s, Jaime de Guzman's mythopoetic landscapes came to fruition when he veered away from his macabre expressionism, which featured elements of the occult and the surreal and had pervaded his art from the 1960s to the 1970s. This metamorphosis resulted from the idyllic environs of his home in Candelaria, Quezon. The radical transformation of his subject matters now exhibited his affection and familiarity towards nature and animals. Yet, this evolution did not in any way eradicate the pronounced quality of his earlier works. In this work inspired by the Banahaw cult of the Laguna-Quezon area, Alice Guillermo notes, "he comes up with landscapes of a painterly spirit marked with folk motifs… Thus, there arises unresolved tension between the emotional power of the historical paintings and the folk picturesque of the Banahaw works."

Jaime de Guzman (b. 1942) Sala signed and dated 1993 oil on canvas 24” x 30” (61 cm x 76 cm)   Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner   WRITE UP: Painter, potter, and also a poet, Laguna-born artist Jaime De Guzman first majored in Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University in 1961, but transferred to the University of Santo Tomas to take up Painting. However, after two years, he felt restless and began spending a year of traveling and painting in Cebu, Samar, and Zamboanga. Returning to Manila, he enrolled as a fine arts student at the University of the Philippines. Caught by the art movement in his time, Expressionism, De Guzman would translate modern man’s anxieties and other meta-issues through his bold expressionist brushstrokes. His works are often called “apocalyptic art”; as his art got more attention, he was then selected to be part of the first Thirteen Artists show at the CCP in 1970. Dark and surreal, De Guzman’s canvases are filled with symbolisms and poetic abstractions described as sociohistorical- psychological paintings. In contrast to De Guzman’s angry and foreboding earlier works, this 1993 work reveals the shift of his art-making from using a dark palette and being preoccupied with issues of the human condition to creating “lightscapes.” In the 1990s, he travelled to quaint places such as Dumaguete, Vigan, and Sorsogon. It was also in this period when he moved to the US with his family, producing Philippine and Southeast Asian landscapes as well as autobiographical paintings.
