Abstract Composition, goauche, 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 in (19.05 x 27.31 cm), signed lower right, dated 1944, PROVENANCE: Property of a private collector Pennsylvania, ARTIST NOTATION: James Meilke Guy is considered by many a "Social Surrealist" with a painting style influenced by Salvador Dali and Fernand Legere. Throughout his life he had been politically involved in a number of organizations. During World War II, he worked in an aircraft factory and it was suggested that he was highly influenced by the abstract shapes which he incorporated into his art work and thru this experience his style changed from social surrealism to a more abstractionist approach to art incorporating abstract forms and the human figure. Guy was born in Connecticut and for a period of time taught at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT as well as the Hartford College for Women and the Bennington College of Vermont. He died in 1983 in Moodus, CT. This artist achieved a record auction price over $45000 in 2017. SEE IMAGE 5.
