Gute 1933 Signed and titled on the reverse: "Haying" / Herbert J. Gute - Yale PROVENANCE: Sale: Weschler's Auctioneers & Appraisers, Rockville, Maryland, May 13, 1989, lot 143; Private collection, Northern California. Herbert Gute, born in Jeffersonville, New York, in 1907, is best known for his illustrations, watercolors, and genre scenes. Gute served as Yale's staff artist at the Dura-Europos excavation in Syria for three years, and his reproductions of frescos found at the site remain part of the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection. His work is also featured in notable museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, and the Jewish Museum in New York. In addition to teaching drawing and painting at the Yale University School of Fine Art, he served as an art therapy advisor at the Connecticut Mental Hospital. Gute's large-scale painting Haying embodies the art of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project (FAP), which was established in the early ‘30s, around the same year as Haying. The WPA fostered the production of realistic scenes from everyday American life and promoted themes of farming and small town industrialization, exemplified by the present work. Here, agrarian animals, field labor, and farming tools capture the American genre scene characteristic of the WPA period. This lot is located in Heritage Auction's San Francisco gallery. The buyer will be responsible for pick-up or shipment from this location. HID01801242017
