Probir Gupta, originally from Calcutta is an artist and activist based in New Delhi. Known for his socially engaged paintings, sculptures and installations, he constructs a complex image of resistance. Probir graduated in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta in 1981 and went on to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a two-year scholarship from the French government. He stayed there until 1987, before returning to India. The two works presented here illustrate his artistic production during his stay in France. His first solo exhibition in France was in Caen (Normandy, 1984), followed by a major exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-arts (Brussels, 1986). Solo exhibitions include Rooms Full of Mirrors, Anant Art in collaboration with Emami Art (Kolkata, 2022), Family is Plural, curated by Shaheen Merali, Anant Art at Bikaner House (New Delhi, 2019) Desert Scrap, Nature Morte, (Berlin, 2010) Probir Gupta, Alexia Goethe Gallery (London, 2008), among others. ‘My work is generally about people, situations, politics, discrimination and marginalisation.
