She studied with the cubist Andre Lhote from 1922 to 1925 but had already spent many years in France. Born in 1863, Guinness first visited Paris before 1910 where she studied art with the Dutch artist Kees Van Dongen, an expressionist painter. She continued to visit the city regularly and to develop her understanding of modernism right into her sixties and beyond. This portrait depicts a young woman wearing a bright strikingly modern costume of coloured stripes with a pink band of material across her head. Her hands are held dutifully in her lap while her detached expression suggests the ennui associated with posing for long periods. Although called a portrait the work can be considered in terms of its abstract design and use of form. Guinness was strongly influenced by French expressionism or Fauvism and especially by the work of Henri Matisse and Van Dongen. This is evident in this painting. The thinly applied paint with its flat texture suggests the technique of fresco painting. It is a style that Matisse used in a number of his paintings most notably in his Portrait of André Derain (1905, Tate) which was shown in the inaugural Fauve exhibition at the Salon dAutomne in 1905. Guinness painted murals at her family home, Tibradden House in the 1920s (now destroyed) in which she may have deployed a similar effect. The strong pinks and oranges of the shadows cast on the face in Portrait of A Woman are typical of Fauvist art which exaggerates the effects of light and shade to create highly decorative and expressive paintings. Guinness was well aware of this idea. Her one-woman exhibition in London in 1922 was called Decorative Paintings and Drawings. Born in Dublin in 1863 she was part of a generation of pioneering Irish artists that included Grace Henry (1868-1953), Eileen Gray (1878-1976), and Mary Swanzy (1882-1978) who travelled outside Ireland to learn about the most innovative movements in art. In the mid-1890s, Guinness began by studying in Cornwall with Norman Garstin where plein-air painting was encouraged. Soon after, she exhibited for the first time at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. From 1902-03 she travelled to Florence and then later to Paris where she was exposed to the avant-garde developments of early Cubism around the salon of Gertrude Stein. During the First World War she became a nurse in the French army and was awarded the Médaille de la Reconnaissance Française for bravery. After the war, she returned to Paris to study with Kees Van Dongen whose Expressionist style would long influence her. Guinness was already fifty-nine years old when she went to study with André Lhote in 1922. She exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1923 and continued to work with Lhote until 1925. Still Life with Green Bottle was made concurrently with her time in Paris and demonstrates that she had absorbed many of the principles of Cubism in her work. Breaking with academic tradition and the laws of perspective inherited from Renaissance masters, cubist painters no longer copied from nature or from the works of other masters. The rules of modelling, foreshortening and especially perspective were abandoned. Paintings should no longer attempt to fool the eye by conveying three dimensionality, rather the two dimensional space of the surface, canvas and paint should be celebrated for their formal qualities. The image to be conveyed was reduced to geometric forms. It was then fractured and seen from multiple viewpoints. Paintings were no longer lit from a single viewpoint but modelled for volume. Still life was a popular subject for the cubists and Still Life with Green Bottle is a good example of the genre. The objects depicted such as the fruit bowl and table-cloth have been successfully reduced to patterns and groups of shapes. We see an image that has been so abstracted that it has become almost unreadable. The viewpoints taken by Guinness create an overlapping and layered effect, pulling apart the subject, before putting it back together again - something that was radical for its time. The first works of Cubism by Picasso and Braque demonstrated a restrained palette, using blacks, browns and greys; here Guinness uses more vibrant colours although the stippling and wood-grain effects are very typical of the style of Picasso. André Lhote taught a number of Irish painters including Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone, Norah McGuinness, Jack Hanlon and others. In spring 2013 May Guinness formed part of an important and exciting exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art titled Analysing Cubism. It highlighted the strong association between Irish female artists, Cubism and the promotion of Modernist Art in Ireland. The present work, Still Life, reflects Guinness' avant-garde style and demonstrates her radical reimaging of composition, form and colour in this genre. Among Guinness' contemporaries exhibited in IMMA were Mainie Jellett, Mary Swanzy, Evie Hone and Norah McGuinness alongside their continental counterparts Pablo Picasso, George Braque, Albert Gleizes and André Lhote. It was in the company of Hone and Jellett that Guinness travelled to France to study under Lhote from 1922 to 1925. May Guinness first travelled to Paris in 1910 and, at the outbreak of World War I, she relocated there to become a military nurse in the French armed forces. She exhibited regularly in Dublin throughout her career. Venues included the RHA, IELA and the Dublin Painters Group. A memorial retrospective was held the year after her death in 1955 at the Dawson Gallery.

She was very influenced by Kees Van Dongen, and later studied with the cubist Andre Lhote, 1922-25. She began making extensive trips to France in 1910 when she was in her mid forties. By 1920, having been awarded the Croix de Guerre for her work as a French army nurse during World War One, Guinness was developing a distinctive style of painting. A review of an exhibition of her work in London that year described her as painting, 'not to represent but to decorate'. Lady by Window is evidence of this need to 'decorate'. Decoration and patterning permeate its construction. It is not a conventional portrait but a study of form and colour. The subject is very close to the themes associated with the work of Henri Matisse, an artist whom Guinness greatly admired. The figure is situated in an interim space between the interior of a room, a shaded balcony and the open sun-filled space of the street beyond. The strong colour of the red curtain permeates the surrounding space. It is reflected on the contours of the figure's arms and is complimented by the red upholstery of the chair on which she sits and by a shawl that covers her knees. The elaborate construction of the space beyond the curtain - the blue sky and the intense white of the building convey the feeling of strong sunshine while the green of the open window pane indicates interior shade. These different tones are brought together in the rectangular patterns of interlocking colours on the right hand side of the painting which frame the sitter. The figure, who sits in a self-conscious pose, has an open book beside her but the position of her arms indicates the artificiality of the theme. She is an extension of the patterning found elsewhere in the painting. Her strong profile, her artful coiffeur and above all the intricate design of her pale blue dress subsume her in to a world of decoration and art. Guinness was a consummate embroiderer, even teaching embroidery in Dublin and exhibiting examples of her needlework in the city in 1921. Her understanding of abstract design, which she has gleaned from French expressionism and cubism, and from the more immediate source of needlework, recurs across the painting. Curvilinear forms subtly undermine the geometry of other elements in the composition. The lace trim of the curtain, the sinuous shape of the iron railing, the curvaceous shape of the glass vase and above all the elaborate detail of the woman's dress highlight a vision of the world in which patterning and configuration of form and colour holds sway. In 1894 May travelled with Mildred Anne Butler to study painting under Norman Garstin at Newlyn, Cornwall. She exhibited several works at the RHA between 1897 & 1911, however she had a falling out with them and never exhibited there again. From 1910 she visited France on a regular basis painting scenes of fairs and weddings in Brittany. In 1914 at the age of fifty one she left Ireland and joined the French army as a military nurse. This heroic gesture was recognised by the French authorities and she received medals of honour at the end of hostilities. Throughout a long life she exhibited her work in both Paris, London and Dublin to wide acclaim. This small, beautifully executed work shows how skilled she was.
