Dimensions : 40 x 31,5 cm Provenance : succession Fulchiron Monte-Carlo. Peintre français né à Puteaux, il fait partie des grands orientalistes français du 19ème siècle, s'attachant aux rendus de lumière et d'atmosphère. Elève de Picot et de Barrias à l'Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris, il expose au Salon de 1861 à 1880. Tant dans ses peintures que dans ses écrits, il décrit la vie primitive et rude dans le désert algérien, au moment où naît en France un grand intérêt pour les populations algériennes en raison de leurs rapprochements politiques et économiques. Gustave Guillaumet est ainsi l'un des premiers artistes, incluant Eugène Delacroix avec son célèbre tableau Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement, à pénétrer dans l’espace intime des femmes Algériennes et à en dévoiler un portrait bien plus réel que les nombreux fantasmes de harem qui régnaient à cette époque. Cet artiste visionnaire sait porter un regard lucide et franc sur les débuts de la colonisation, les épidémies et la famine qui ont sévi brutalement entre 1866 et 1869, en réalisant des œuvres bien loin des clichés de nombreux peintres orientalistes. Guillaumet est inhumé à Paris au cimetière de Montmartre, sa tombe est ornée de "La Fille de Bou Saâda", une statue en bronze de Louis-Ernest Barrias figurant une jeune Algérienne assise le bras levé jetant quelques pétales sur le portrait en médaillon de l'artiste.

The exceptional expressive force of French artist Gustave Guillaumet's North African paintings separate them from the work of most other Orientalists of the late 19th century whose efforts are often more picturesque in nature. A product of the École des Beaux-Arts, Guillaumet was a regular exhibitor at the French Salon by 1861. The following year, with an intention of continuing his studies in Rome, Guillaumet impulsively changed his course to North Africa. Although the artist suffered from numerous spells of malaria, this would be the first of ten trips he made to Algeria and Morocco over the course of his life. The deserts of North Africa and life there profoundly inspired him to dedicate his career to painting them. His canvases won numerous medals and he was eventually awarded the title Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. This landscape of 1869 depicting farmers at the end of a long day of desert labor belongs to Guillaumet's first series of paintings showing peasants working their fields. He produced this series in response to the great crisis of 1866-1869, which ravaged the rural population of Algeria. A combination of factors including locust plagues of 1866 and 1868, a brutal winter in 1867-8, and political upheavals caused a devastating famine followed by a catastrophic epidemic of cholera. As Marie Gautheron, the preeminent scholar on the work of Gustave Guillaumet has noted, Soir d'hiver, Maroc (exhibited in the Salon of 1870) was the second painting in the artist's four-painting series which also included: Le labour en Algérie of 1869 (Salon of 1869), now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Limoges; Feux de broussailles en Algérie (exhibited under the title Les Défrichesments in the Salon of 1874), now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon; and Le labour en Algérie (Salon of 1876), private collection. Guillaumet's critical success at the Salon of 1869 with Le labour en Algérie continued with his submissions to the Salons of 1870 and 1874, which also portrayed Muslim farmers laboring near the Moroccan border. As Marie Gautheron notes: "Soir d'hiver presents a less exotic scene than that of the previous year, in a more open site, less disturbing. Only a few details assure the Oriental character of the motif that Guillaumet treats here in a spirit very different from that of his previous painting. The facture is still analytical, but the palette has lower contrast, and the composition is as melancholy as the previous work was dramatic. The focus is on the climate: this "cold winter evening" brings the public closer to its subject by showing an aspect of Algeria radically opposed to the stereotypes of a romanticized country with its searing blue skies. The draft horse, the crouching peasant, the gloomy lighting and the landscape dotted with puddles are not unusual. This almost naive image speaks of work in the fields which would be the same, there and here; but the archaic plow, the field lost in immensity, and the discreet koubba give it the same symbolic value as the painting of 1869: Soir d'hiver, Maroc is a variation on Le labour, and takes advantage of its success." The exceptional expressive force of French artist Gustave Guillaumet's North African paintings separate them from the work of most other Orientalists of the late 19th century whose efforts are often more picturesque in nature. In this exquisite scene from 1869 depicting farmers laboring to plow the sandy Algerian soil near the Moroccan frontier, the fading light paints the sky with an ethereal glow just before the sun sinks below the horizon. Long shadows fall into the furrows of the recent plowing, and the magnificent white horse in the foreground, just unharnessed from the plow, stands in strict profile to the picture plane with a quietness that nearly resembles a relief sculpture as light glints off his coat. Guillaumet's subject is the culmination of a long hard day's work, and through the vast emptiness of his composition, Guillaumet stressed the insurmountable task of wrestling an existence from the harsh desert region. The particular combination of simplicity and grandeur, which characterizes so many of Guillaumet's paintings, give them an unusually modern quality of alienation. Guillaumet was a product of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which he entered in 1857. By 1861, he was a regular exhibitor at the French Salon. The following year, with an intention of continuing his studies in Rome, Guillaumet impulsively changed his course to North Africa. Although the artist suffered from numerous spells of malaria, this would be the first of ten trips he made to Algeria and Morocco over the course of his life. Profoundly inspired by the deserts of North Africa, Guillaumet exhibited his Prière du soir dans le Sahara at the Salon of 1863, which attracted so much attention that it was bought by the state and is currently owned by the Musée D'Orsay in Paris. This marked the beginning of a long, lucrative career, winning multiple medals and being awarded the title Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. Although Guillaumet never took an anti-colonial stance in his writings about Algeria, in his paintings there is an understated drama being played out. His firsthand experiences in North Africa coincided with a crucial moment in France's policy toward Algeria, characterized by the shift from conquest to colonization. The wistful quality of beautiful emptiness in Guillaumet's landscapes points to an emotional awareness that the old ways were eventually going to fade away. HID04901242017
