Fauvism. Marthe Guillain Watercolor /gouache on paper“Landscape with house”, signed Size: 25 x 31.8 cm. (9.8 x 12.5 inches) Marthe Guillain, born in Charleroi on July 17, 1890 and died in Watermael-Boitsfort (Brussels) in 1974, is a Belgian watercolor painter who also creates collages. Self-taught, his style, evolving from fauvism to abstraction, was influenced by his stays in Paris, the Soviet Union, Istanbul and the Belgian Congo. After initial studies at the University of Labor in Charleroi with the painter Léon Van den Houten1, Marthe Guillain took courses in literary law to become a teacher. In 1914, she went to Russia where she gave private French lessons for a friend's children. From the beginning of the October Revolution, she returned briefly to Belgium before settling in Paris to take advanced drawing courses in the studio of Fernand Cormon. In 1917, Marthe Guillain enlisted as a nurse and was sent to the Yser front where she met the Brabant Fauve painter Médard Maertens who would become her husband. The couple lived in Paris and frequented artists such as Fernand Léger, Chaïm Soutine, Suzanne Valadon, Maurice de Vlaminck and Paul Signac. From this union were born three children. The family continues to live in Paris. In 1924, she organized her first personal exhibition in Paris. In the years that followed, she was invited to exhibit in Bordeaux and Boston, where she obtained the honorary degree2. All avant-garde currents interest him. The progressive virulence of his colors and the audacious schematism of his works are reminiscent of the work of Van Gogh. An intimate painter of figures and interiors and a landscape painter, his way of painting was similar at that time to that of the French fauvist painters. In 1928, she left with her husband for Istanbul. She will teach drawing there. In 1935, she divorced and returned to Belgium. She moved to Watermael-Boitsfort. The Georges Giroux gallery in Brussels exhibited his works from October 26 to November 10, 19463 and from October 31 to November 13, 19474. After going to Istanbul to teach drawing there, she made a trip to the Belgian Congo in 1951. Thanks to a scholarship, she returned there in 1953 for a period of eighteen months where she lived with a tribe of Pygmies for a few months. In the Congo, she paints on sheets and on paper. His works are tinged with fauvist accents and abstract lyricism. His work in Africa gave rise to an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1955 "A woman among the pygmies". Discovering Kandinsky, his canvases become completely abstract. She uses sand which she incorporates into her works6. His painting has continued to evolve throughout his career. She went from a fauvism characterized by a great intensity of colors to a painting with a more intimate universe with less intense colors. Her line will then evolve from expressionism to pure abstraction to end with figuration when she returns from her trip to Africa2. In Watermael-Boitsfort, a major retrospective exhibition of his works was organized in 1970. Marthe Guillain died in Watermael-Boitsfort in 1974 at the age of 84. Fauvism /ˈfoʊvɪzm̩/ is the style of les Fauves (French for "the wild beasts"), a group of early 20th-century modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong color over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. While Fauvism as a style began around 1904 and continued beyond 1910, the movement as such lasted only a few years, 1905–1908, and had three exhibitions.[1][2] The leaders of the movement were André Derain and Henri Matisse.
