He is the son of Henri Guhl, lawyer and founder of the Tourist Office of the canton of Vaud, and Henriette Bessard, parents from whom he inherits a taste for drawing and art. art.Poster designer and graphic designer for thirty years, Alexandre Guhl entered his career through serious studies at the Cantonal School of Fine Arts in Lausanne. He will be the pupil of illustrious teachers such as Henry Bischoff, Casimir Reymond and especially Marcel Poncet, whose painting lessons he assiduously follows. It is in this section that he will twice obtain the distinction of a mention.Guhl exhibited for the first time as part of the Salons des Jeunes, a panorama of young French-speaking Swiss painting which took place in Montreux in 1947 and 1948. His first works immediately caught the attention of Rene Auberjonois who invited him to persevere , lavishes his friendship on him and, a rare privilege, opens the doors of his studio at Grand-Chene in Lausanne without restriction. Certificate and diploma in hand, Guhl pays a last visit to the sick old master, who strongly encourages him to discover Paris, the light of its sky, its museums.Back in Switzerland after having extended his stay thanks to the money earned by crunching American soldiers on the terraces of cafes, Guhl took part in various exhibitions in Lausanne before being honored with an invitation to exhibit some of his work at the famous Milan Triennial alongside Sergio Ponti. In 1954, he won the competition organized by the Literary Gazette in front of 53 competitors. The commentary of the time pays homage to "a particularly harmonious work, revealing the delicacy of the line for the drawings and the quality of the style for the text".During this particularly fruitful period, he also signed numerous wall decorations, illustrations and humorous pages for weeklies such as Pour tous. He also won prestigious poster competitions such as those of the Loterie romande or the cartel of Swiss breweries and was entrusted with the creation of the stained glass windows for the chapel of Chabrey in the Vully vaudois. If we add that he was also set decorator for various programs of Swiss and French television channels, we will better appreciate all the resources of his talent. From the start of the 1980s, Guhl returned to painting with great success, selling almost all of the works exhibited at each exhibition. And this at the same time as many travels which inspire him, and another equally noble activity: the vinification of the product of his vines of Pallens. A few steps from the Maison Visinand, one of the exhibition halls of which now bears his name ... His bronze bust, signed Bernard Bavaud in 2004, is at the entrance of this cultural center that he greatly appreciated and where he had exposed. To the reality of people and things, Guhl has always said he prefers his idea of it. Did he therefore succeed in structuring his mind to eliminate what conditioned him? This seems to be the path chosen by the artist from Montreux, prompting this remark from Jean-Louis Rebetez: Guhl, going beyond the limits of the real world, takes the opportunity to explore other borders which are those of the dream and the fantastic. "Jacques Chessex for his part compared it to his master Marcel Poncet in these terms (VOIR, 1990):" It is also a very material painting, and I do not forget that in the Fine Arts, Alexandre Guhl, in addition to great artists (Henry Bischoff, Casimir Reymond) had as master Marcel Poncet, who did not fail to give him the requirement and the taste of the sumptuous material treated and reworked in depth. But see, if there is filiation in the recognition and the respect, the painter of whom I speak here chose his natural course: Poncet inclined to the dark stubborn, Alexandre Guhl is better made for plenitude and relief. His work says it with the welcome and fruitful coherence of accord to the world. "Alexandre Guhl fell asleep on September 7, 1998 in his Pallens bed, never to wake up, at the age of 69. He has never been to the hospital, and this fatal night is one of the few in 37 years that he does not spend in the company of his dear wife and muse, Marie-Jeanne.His last painting, started the day before of his death, represents a vine on which floats a strange cloud.
