    Item Description Robert “Bob” Guge was a well-known carver who followed in his father’s footsteps. His father, Roy, also competed in carving competitions and sparked Guge's interest in the craft. By the age of twelve, Guge had already carved several birds. Initially, Guge worked as a house painter, but a chance encounter with renowned carver Delbert “Cigar” Daisey in 1973 made him realize his potential as a professional carver. He continued to work as a painter while honing his carving skills in his free time. Eventually, he left painting behind to pursue his passion. Guge is self-taught but has been influenced by the works of Harold Haertel and Cigar Daisey. He works from his basement studio at home, which allows him to spend time with his family. Guge has been teaching carving since the 1980s to supplement his income and practice his art. In his carvings, he focuses on capturing the essence of the bird rather than creating an exact replica, striking a balance between accuracy and creativity. His pieces range from primitive to realistic and detailed.
