        Est: €2,100 - €2,800

Unknown (19th century): nach Pierre Narcisse Guérin (1774-1833), L'Offrande à Esculape, after 1803, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Cardboard Inscription: signed and dated (unrecognisable) lower right Date: after 1803 Description: The depiction of the children sacrificing for their sick father at the shrine of Aesculapius goes back to a painting by Pierre Narcisse Guérin from 1803, which is now kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Arras. Guerin's idea for the scene depicted comes from Geßner's "Idylls". The father, already marked by illness, is supported by the two sons, the kneeling daughter in front of him has her eye on the snake. By tasting the offerings, the animal, according to the belief, accepted the sacrifice. Both the successful composition and the touching subject matter of the children pleading for their father encouraged various artists to make copies of the painting, so that it also found print distribution through the draughtsman Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne and the engraver Claude Marie François Dien. The present print undoubtedly derives from that original. Provenance: Aus dem Nachlass des Professor Max Hermann Baege, Berlin Keywords: Asclepius, Antiquity, Figures, Genre, Sacrifice, Family, Fashion, Nudes, 19th century, Classicism, Mythology, France,

PIERRE NARCISSE GUÉRIN 1774 Paris - 1833 Rom (attr.) ARRIA UND PAETUS Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert. 81,5 x 93 cm. Verso: In Alter Schrift bezeichnet 'Guerin f / Schule David'. Rahmen. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Rheinland. B. François Vincent, Benjamin West, Dante Gabriel Rossetti).
