Jules Guerin Print Presented to Jane Deeter Rippin

    Est: $150 - $300

DESCRIPTION: Offset lithograph of the Washington Monument by Jules Vallee Guerin (American, 1866-1946). As noted verso, "Presented to Jane Deeter Rippin 1929 by Mrs. Herbert Hoover at the White House Washington, D.C. 1928". In original wood frame. PROVENANCE: Items consigned by Rippin's great-nephew. Jane Deeter Rippin (1882-1953) was born Jane Parker Deeter in Harrisburg on May 30, 1882. She was a social worker who founded the first women offender's detention home and played an important role in developing court systems geared toward women and in organizing programs to prevent delinquency. Heavily involved with the Girl Scouts, she served as National Director from 1919 to 1930 and was responsible for developing the organization from the highly personalized form developed by founder Juliette Low into an efficient modern-day organization. Membership under her leadership grew from 50,000 to 250,000. She was also responsible for establishing regions and regional councils as well as training schools and camps, including the Edith Macy Training Center whose buildings were designed by her husband, architect James Yardley Rippin. Rippin worked with the Edith Carpenter Macy (Chairman of the Girl Scout National Council Executive Board at the time), and later her husband V. Everit Macy after Mrs. Macy's death, as well as Mrs. Herbert Hoover (then Girl Scout National President) to establish the Edith Macy Training Center. Rippin helped in the development of the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides in 1928. Of special note is the fact that Rippin initiated the annual cookie sale which still serves as one of the organization's major fund raisers. Deeter died on June 2, 1953 in Tarrytown, New York. A Girl Scout sampler by Deeter is offered as in the previous lot. MEASUREMENTS: 23" x 15-3/8". Overall with frame 24-3/8' x 16-3/4". CONDITION: Minor uniform toning. Light frame wear.
